Anyone had bad luck with Savage rifles?

 I think that I may be the only one to ever buy a Savage that won't group.  After several different factory and reloads, my 16FLSS still refused to shoot well so I had it glass bedded last week.  Now the gunsmith swears my barrel is bent slightly, down and to the right.  Can this cause groups to average 3.0"@100 yds?  If so, guess I'll need to start searching for a new barrel, I'd certainly like to be able to shoot 2" or better on a regular basis.  This is a deer hunter, not a target rifle so I'm not certain an expensive custom barrel would be worthwhile.  Anyone have an idea where I might be able to buy a barrel?  A good take off would probably be just fine.  Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Any manufacturer can put out a bad barrel once in a while. Even custom barrel makers can have a bad one once in a while. You will need to put a WTB listing in the classified ads. If you are looking for a new barrel that does not cost a whole lot you might look into Adams & Bennett barrels sold through Midway USA.

Here is a link to barrels that might fit your need. they cost $130 + shipping. While not match quality, they should fit your needs very nicely. You may not be able to find one that matches your case, but a 7mm-08, 338 Federal, 358 Winchester and the 250 Savage will fit. Any one would make a good deer rifle. They are all out right now, but show that they will be available later this summer.

Northland usually keeps a decent stock of new, unfired, take-off factory barrels.  If you don't see what you want in that post, give him a call.

Call Jim at Northland, he's great to deal with, I've bought a pre fit target barrel from him. Those factory barrels he sells should do you fine and be the cheapest option for you.

Eather call or E-mail Savage and tell them your story and see what they have to say. An E-mail is free and they may give you a new barrel.

Can't email Savage; they won't respond.  Even their site tells you that.  Call them early in the mornings (early after they open, that is ).

I had a junk Savage factory barrel a few years ago.  I bought the gun brand new.  It was after they'd gone broke and been sold, but my rifle had been manufactured before the failure/purchase so they wouldn't touch it.  Though I understand perfectly well why companies do that, it makes it difficult for me to want to give the new guys my money.

I did have a(300 RSAM) savage in a package deal that had heavy bolt lift after firing factory ammo . The dealer took the rifle back, and Savage  to my knowledge was never involved .Thinking back now I regret not having it sent back to Savage , since the gun shot very well.

I would second Catfish's  post contact Savage. Even if they only now would come to part of the party , your still better off , giving them a chance .

If all you want is a factory take-off barrel, go to Savageshooters.com and pm Sinman. He is a site vendor and his ads can be found in the vendors classifieds(SinArms). He has tons of new and used factory take-off barrels for sale that he takes as trade-ins for the new Lothar Walther barrels he sells.

Northlander is also a very good choice for new barrels, as well as everything else he sells.

I needed to replace an ejector on a bolt of a 12fv years ago, and that was a very small complaint where their customer service took excellent care of me.  I've had nothing but great experience with Savage rifles.

Love my Savage rifles.  I've got two personally, and we've got five between the boys and I.

All of ours are blue steel, but we've got short action and long action, ood stock and synthethic.  We love them.  The barrels seem to shoot better as you approach 500 rounds, but that might be the way we break them in. 

No, I've never had bad luck with a Savage that I could blame on the rifle.

Since the topic is about bad experiences with Savage rifles, I wasn't going to post. However, since the last 2 posts were about positive experiences, I'll chime in. I bought an All Weather Synthetic Stock Savage in 270 Win w/Accutrigger about 3 years ago for my Son-in-Law. He's in the Military and is currently serving in Iraq. The model I bought had the adjustable muzzle brake. So, in effect it has a 20" barrel with the muzzle brake in the "on" position, which is how he likes to shoot it. He has used it the few times he's been in town for deer season but has yet to get a shot at a deer.

Well, I recently bought 7 different boxes of factory ammo to test for accuracy and velocity. FWIW, this did make me wish I handloaded for the 270 Win. Anyway, the factory ammo I tested in this rifle was: Federal Premium w/Barnes 110 gr TTSX, w/130 gr TSX and w/140 gr Accubond; Federal Fusion w/130 & 150 gr bullets; and, Hornady Custom w/130 gr Interbond and Lt. Mag. w/130 gr Interbond.

All except the Hornady Lt. Mag. shot a 3-shot group into a 1" or better group @ 100 yards. Most of the groups had 2 shots almost touching one another with the 3rd shot opening up the group a little. The Hornady Lt. Mag. shot into about a 5" group, which only means this particular rifle did not like those. This is by no means an extensive evaluation but it does show the accuracy potential of this Savage. I think my Son-in-Law has a winner with this rifle.

I own two Savage rimfire rifles. I bought the .22 model 64 a month or two ago and have only had my lil .17 HMR for a couple of weeks. I bought the 93r17 used. I like both of them. I called the factory a few days after I bought the model 64 to buy some extra mags. I had seen them for $30 on the web. They averaged around $20. The factory had them for $13. I bought 3 and had them in less than a week. There is a very nice lady that answers the phone in the parts section and she knows her stuff. I called a few days ago to check on a new stock and a few screws and parts for the .17. She knows every part by number and price so it did not take her long to let me know what the cost of my little rebuild job was going to be. I would give them the first shot(excuse the pun) at anything I did with one of their firearms. I have a good feeling about these folks and their products.

Ive had nothing but bad luck with mine, but I dont blame the rifle. The original factory bull barrel in stainless had a bullet not exit the barrel when shooting subsonics, then fired another. Had to ditch the barrel and replaced it with a ER Shaw factory barrel. Shot great, then changed barrels to 6.5x55 swede. Had a hell of a time switching bolt faces and cant get the extractor to grab the cases in addition to not being able to get the thing to group.

I chock it up to bad luck, but not the guns fault. As soon as I break/blow up this gun Ill go Sako.

And I have a 17hmr, and is my favorite rifle period.
