(NEW PICS) Who likes shorty rifles??
« on: October 04, 2009, 01:42:32 PM »
Here are pics of a shorty Encore I've started. The barrel is a FRO 16-1/4" 22Hornet. The stock is a Stinger from Gunstocks Inc. I customized by cutting finger grooves into the grip and a slight thumbrest. The Schnabel forearm I made from matching Tiger Wood laminate. I'll post more pics when the finish is done.

Shorty after finish!

Very nice Dave.
I may have to do something like that with my 16-1/4" 223
Looking forward to the finish product.

I thought my 20" Encore was short, but that is very short.

:o I just noticed the break.
On a 22 hornet ???
That would be like shooting a loud BB gun.
I love it ;)

Looks good.
I have a 16" contender in 223
I will post a picture later in the week.  Mine is about 2/3 the size of a standard 10/22 rifle and will fit in the short case and will fold over at the top.
I use it for Javilina in hilly country.  the 4.5 pound rifle is a dream to carry up and down the hills.  I think it weighs less than my 44 mag revolver loaded.

I use it as a pistol also with the same rifle scope for turkey hunting. The brake is probably over kill, and surprisingly its not that loud. Target shooting I do wear ear protection when shooting it but hunting the noise doesn't bother me.

Legally mine is a pistol, therefore shorter than 16" barrels. The little knob on the back makes a good short stock though. I think it may be for steadying off the forearm when shooting. Never seen another stock like it so I don't know. It is great for hunting the bottoms where there is a lot of thick hedges to meander through.

Actually your rig wears a Fajen Big Shot grip with a Fajen Banana forend (both long discontinued).   The grip was designed for a push/pull stance for stability using both hands on the grip, and they were available for either right and left hand shooters.   You push with the shooting hand, pull the "D" back with the off hand IOW.   Worked surprisingly well, which is good I guess as they are ugly as sin IMO.   My last B.S. set was their Victory color (red, white and blue), which was even uglier than your coffee set.   They also came in pepper and camo colors.

...

Good looking shorty Dave.   I really like it (as a long time fan of bullpups I like short carbines).

My last shorty Contender was built to be a predator hunting rig, used a Choate folding stock, Pachy forend and 18" 6X47 barrel.   Made to be a great light weight rig to swing in tight cover.   When I lived in the condo I carried it folded in a tennis racket bag so nobody knew it was a firearm.   Picture was taken when first put together... soon changed the scope to a very compact 3-9 sniper model with lighted reticle.

BTW, keep in mind BATF minimum rifle length when building these rigs.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Ladobe, you leave my ugly little pistol/rifle alone bub! :D
Thanks for the info on it. I never knew the color to buy a pistol grip without the knob. Or a butt stock for the longer barrels. Might just be able to find a fajen at midway or go with another brand that matches up descent.
Thanks

Uglier than sin (and your Fajen set) fits the Choate shorty setup I had.    ;)

You won't get a matching Fajen buttstock from Midway, or anywhere else unless you find an old used one laying around for sale someplace.   Like I said, long discontinued (the original Reinhart Fajen company has been gone almost 20 years).

Georgia Jim and Gunstocks Inc would be the possibilities I'd check to get matching grip or buttstock to that forend if you like the "banana" that much.    I don't like them, so I'd just get a complete new set (grip, buttstock, forend) made if it was me.

Here is my shorty 45/70.  It started out as a blued 24" barrel but avter cutting it down and haveing it "french grayed" by EABCO I mainly used it as a boat gun, something nice and short and very accurate.  Also makes a dandy cornfield stalking rifle.  I've been toying with the idea of putting a scout scope on it.  That way it can do dual duty as long pistol or short rifle.

This one is pretty short. Bullberry 16 1/2" full bull CM barrel in .221 FB. Very effective 200 yd. prairie dog smacker. My buddy says I look funny shooting it (I'm 6'5") off the bench.
