Cast bullet design for breech seating
« on: October 18, 2009, 02:25:17 PM »
I'm interested in Scheutzen competition.
That means MOA accuracy or better at 100 and 200 yards.
Most folks GOOD at it breech seat (putting the bullet into the rifling up to 1/2 the last band).
That generally means bore riding bullets.
NO gas checks.

What is your take on best design for breech seating bullets?  I'm interested in a wide variety of bores - .22, 7mm, .30, .32, .357, .40, 44 and .45.

Not usually bore riding bullets, but parallel sided with the front band reduced a bit to engrave the lands. The throat is very long to fit the whole bullet seated in front of the case. If you're not in a hurry it's certainly the best way to get good cast bullet accuracy.

There is a new book out on Schutzen, available from Bill Ferguson or Track of the Wolf (and I'm sure others) that is a very good read if you haven't seen it yet. I too would love to get into that game, but too many irons in the fire for that now!

Thanks, Nobade -

I'll check into it.

Just starting to make moulds, thought I'd see what other's experiences in high accuracy was.

Some others will have each band different, with the front being bore diameter or maybe .0005 over, with the rear snug in the throat for a good gas seal. Since you're making your own moulds, you've got some leeway to make exactly what your rifle needs, or to change its throating and make an appropriate bullet for it. Should be fun getting it to work, that may keep you entertained for a while!
