Author Topic: Model 70 Extractor Problem (Read 1836 times)

I recently purchased a 1976 Winchester Model 70. Never heard anything bad about them
so I figured I'd go for it. Accurate and a nice looking rifle, only problem is every second round will
not eject properly. After the brass clears the chamber it will fall straight down into the receiver.
The extractor lets go for whatever reason at this point like so:

Could this be the result of a worn extractor?

Is this extractor broken, it looks like one side of it is boke off?

Where can I get a new one if needed?

It looks broken to me. Take it to a gunsmith.

your extractor surely has a chip missing toward the top.

From the pictures, it is apparent there is plenty of cartridge case material built up on the face of the bolt. If replacement is needed anyway, it wouldn't cost much to remove the extractor and see how much dirt and brass chips are under it. Maybe a cleaning will allow it to reach farther into the case head ?

It wouldn't be the first time I had an extractor fail to function because there was enough garbage under it to prevent it from getting purchase on the case.

I was wondering about that. Is this normal?

In my experience, there is usually traces of brass in the bolt face, but I have never seen as much as your pictures show.

When cleaning my rifles, I use a small brush and solvent on the bolt face, so they stay relatively brass free.

It could be the previous owner(s) just never cleaned it, and this could indicate dirt in the extractor mortice causing more problems than the missing chip.

If the cases you fired in the rifle show no deformation when compared to unfired cases, the brass fouling may not be caused by a mechanical problem, but, just to be safe, having the head space checked doesn't cost much.

I checked the underside of the extractor and it is clean.
How can I clean that big of a deposit of brass off of the boltface?

Winchester still has some parts - If they have no extractors, they might be able to direct you to a source.
I would call them with your rifle's SN.

I clean the bolt face with Hoppe's Bench Rest, or Shooter's Choice, which both contain ammonia.

I wet the face of the bolt with the solvent, then scrub with a small stainless brush.

You may want to wet yours with the solvent, and let it work for an hour or so. May take a few tries.

Scrap that p.o.s. extracter! Take your bolt to a good smith and have a sako style extracter put in!

togojeff, A broken exctracter is a simple fix and if you have some mechanical ability you can do it yourself. I had an extracter break on my 1984 vintage 257R featherweight. Purchaced a new one and replaced it no problem. BUT, now you might have a problem, finding the part.

Contact Winchester direct, And see if you can still get one. I'm not going to say for sure, but I think that is the only place your going to get one, as I have been to the other sites mentioned, and after Winchester abandonded us for more of the almighty $$

things dried up pretty quick. Mine broke just before they took it all away from us, parts were easy to get, Damn I should have bought 2. Good luck. CRASH87

I've never seen that much brass on a bolt face of mine, but I don't shoot a lot with the same rifle. I wonder if the previous owner shot very hot loads.

This can be done?

I contacted Midwest Gun Works and they have the extractor in stock $39.95
Problem is they won't ship to Canada where I happen to be.
