stopping power of hornady LE ?
« on: October 27, 2009, 01:03:07 PM »
i get great accuracy out of my 30 30 with ammo. all the reviews state that it great stopping power at 100-200 yards.what about if the deer come in under 50 yards? does anyone have results that they can share? or should i stick with rem/win 170 grain ammo?

killed 6 deer so far with the le.ammo. 2 drt but they were hit in the spines, almost straight down. 4 were double lung hit that did not go more then 50 yards with good blood trails. hopes this helps.

I took a buck last year at 187 yards with the LE ammo and he dropped like a ton of bricks. I have taken 4 deer all total with the LE 30-30 with 2 being less than 100 yards and 1 being 25 yards and all were lung shots and none went more than 40 yards. I have had pretty much the same results with .444. 45-70 and .44 mag LE ammo.

Saw this same question on another forum a few minutes ago.  To answer your question,  0-200 yds , will work fine.

i posted it on a other forum just trying to get much info as i can.with rifle season opening in a few days. the accuracy i'am getting is too good to be true.gone from 1 1/2" to 2" with rem/win ammo to 1/2" to 3/4" at 100 yrds that's better than a few of my bolt action i have.

Jsnow1979......I have the 30-30 but seldom use it for hunting ok. I instead use my Marlin 444 with the Hornady LE ammo and there is no doubt in my mind, since I ran some tests last year, that the LE ammo would do just fine out to 200 yards or further with my .444 caliber. Your 30-30 would most likely do well out to a 150 yards I know, without looking anything up in the ballistic tables. I have always perferred the 170 grn weight with a 30-30 gun!

I too think the LE ammo would be a very good choice in your 30-30 also and don't even worry about under 50 yards with your 30-30 lever gun. You don't have that blazing velocity in the first place to really cause a lot of bloodshot meat on the deer etc. This is were 7mm magnums and my very own .300 Win mag will make a mess of things.

My .444 Marlin with Hornady LE ammo has shot less than 2 inch groups at 100 yards using a 2 x 7 Leupold Vari X-2 rifle scope. I am postitive I could shoot better groups but I don't have to reload for this rifle and a box of shells will last a long time. I do practice with my cast reloads but I like the way the LE ammo works and the trajectory it gives with a 265 grain bullet.

I have taken Mule deer with the 35 Rem and 338 Marlin Exp. LE ammo.  Both did an outstanding job, 35 was less than 30 yd and the 338 was over 200.  DP
