.357 Mag loads
« on: October 19, 2009, 02:25:09 PM »
I have been reading and following a lot of the posts here, great information!  I recently purchased a .357 Mag 10" stainless contender and checked the bore, it has the 1.75" chambering as opposed to the longer.  I see the great performance of the .357 Maximum and was wondering if anyone has seated the bullet out of the cases of regular magnum to get more powder in the case to get close to maximum performance.  I would expect you would be using most of the barrel performance at that point because of the length.  What do you guys think?

I wouldn't.  If you want .357 Maximum performance, either get a .357 Maximum barrel or have your .357 Magnum barrel rechambered to .357 Maximum.

I had thought of going that route but I am more interested in keeping the barrel as is and was curious if there was anyone out there already doing what I had mentioned.

I know some silhouette shooters would seat 180 grain bullets long enough that they wouldn't work in a revolver, but regular weight bullets, I don't think so.

On top of potentially creating a dangerous pressure situation, you may just not have enough room to seat the bullets out very far before hitting the lands anyway.

Realistically speaking, the .357 Magnum is no slouch out of a 10" Contender anyway.  You aren't bleeding any of your pressure out of the barrel/cylinder gap like you would a revolver, and you have between 4 and 6" of extra length beyond what most revolvers give.
