Hornady 180gr Silouette bullets

  Ran across a large amount of Hornady 180gr silouette bullets marked CL SIL on box at a gun show. Given the lack of available 180gr
 pistol bullets would these be worth picking up for use in the 357 max.They are a jacketed small hollow point does anyone have any
 experience in there use as a target bullet or heavy hunting bullet? At 15 per box would they be worth going back for? Would appreciate

I don't understand the 15 per box packaging unless they are intended for use in muzzle loader sabots. I think if they are marked as for silhouette use they would be primarily for target use and for hunting you should consider them as solids and unless they have a decent meplat are not likely to be real effective I'd think but I honestly am not familiar with that bullet.

Greybeard is correct, they would make excellent target rounds, but not a very good hunting round unless you are shooting Varmints.


$15 bucks a hundred would be a decent price, but not a steal if they won't work for what you want.  If that's per 50 I'd pass.

Did I misunderstand? Is 15 a price? I saw no dollar sign and took it to mean they are packed 15 to a box/package. If that's the price per box agree for 100 not a bad price but if for 50 far from a great price.

   The metplat is a rather small hollow cavity so expansion will not be great but at the velocity of the 357 max may work for hogs.
 I did buy 2 boxes as 180gr 357 are difficult to find and wanted something to shoot to try out the recently converted Handi as I
 will probably use XTP or SSPB when they come more available. I am going to try these with a healthy load of Lil Gun just to get the feel
 of this weight in the max. Will get to the range this week.  Thanks for the replys, Fred

I shoot them out of a 10" 357 max and they are great..   Shoot the same as the XTP's ..  A friend of mine uses them for deer and hogs..   I personaly saw a large Doe he shot last year. He hit it in the front shoulders and it did a Fine job on it.  Went right through both.  Hornady manual recommends them for large game also..  I've used them with RL-7 and H110 with great luck .. My friend uses Lil'Gun ..

I also do not feel comfortable shooting game with sill bullets. I do not know about the Hornady's, but Nosler's also makes a sill 180 GR 357 bullet and they say its a good hunting bullet as long as velocities are high like we can get in rifles with the mag AND maxi. Mine shoots them very well, but like I say, I don't use them on game. The Hornady's SSP and Speer's GDSP's work so well I have no need to find or look for a better performing bullet.

These days it seems that finding reloading components is still a major hassle and even tho bullets and powder do seem a little easier now than they were even tho primers don't seem any more available it is still something we're having to deal with.

When I last asked Hornady, Nosler and Sierra for bullets speaking with their writer contact guys all indicated they are working as fast as they can to make bullets but just have almost zero stock on hand at the factories and that bullets are shipping as fast as they can make them. All three were unable to fill all of my requests to them. One mentioned that some writer got nothing he asked for as they had none of them to provide. Bullets in the various handgun both pistol and revolver and .224" are the most in demand and in shortest supply they all told me.

Luckily I have a fairly excellent supply of bullets for the .357 Mag on hand it's finding primers to load them that is my problem. I can't seem to find a small pistol magnum primer anywhere and am completely out. I have thousands of bullets and no primers to load them.
