Maybe you should just sell it now and save yourself the pain later. ;) :D ;D lol

There are several here who have modified their stocks, added pads and even put weight in their stock-bolt holes.  I just acquired a standard 45-70 from a friend and have yet to shoot it.  Betcha I will find a pad of some sort after hearing about all this punishment. ;)

Thanks, Dinny

Use one of your thinner sand bags between the stock and your shoulder and sit up straight.
or shoot one of Hubels loads in a 12 ga. You'll never feel the 45/70 again ;D

I shot 50 of the 520 grain slugs with 90 to 100 grains og RE17 in my Handi with the BC stock. That's guaranteed to keep you awake!

I love my steel butt plate, only on my 45 Colt that is! 45/70 is a different story.

Honestly, have you guy's not put a dead mule in the butt stock?  Get your BC's up in weight to 10 pounds and you will notice a big differance.  I used to shoot 500-gr and 550-gr Creedmore bullets out of mine with no problems, no recoil pad at all.  Quit shooting from the bench and use cross sticks, and it will help a whole bunch.

The 405-gr bullets were a cats meow load, even with a full case of BP as my charge, alot of smoke and roar, and sure was fun to sit all afternoon and blast away with several hundred loads.

Try Cabela's lace-up kick killer butt pad.

Worked well for me.
I've been to the upper end of levergun loads and the pad makes it bearable.
I don't want to go much warmer, recoil pad or not.

I don't even notice Trapdoor level loads.  Make sure you have the gun sand bagged so you aren't hunched over.

I had the same recoil issue with a 20g Tracker. I added 20oz of #8 shot (federal cartridges off the shelf so I did not have to buy a sack of shot) to the stock bolt-hole, and added a Limbsaver slip-on, leaving the original recoild pad in place.

Before: 5 shots at the range and I had to quit, 2 weeks to recover the use of my shoulder. After: 15 shots and could have kept going till I exhausted my ammo, and not the slightest pain the next day.

If the LOP is too long by adding the slip-on, get your smith to cut down the stock by 1", install the original or a stock rubber pad, and then put the slip-on on to recover the correct LOP.

After I did this, it convinced me that even though the Tracker would be very versatile, for a beginner centerfire, I was at the wrong end of the recoil world. Sold it and got a 22 Hornet, and have learned to shoot before I ramp up the recoil I the future. No one has to "endure" recoil in this day and age.
