What the heck is going on here?
« on: October 13, 2009, 10:37:24 AM »
Like some others here, shoulder problems are a sure sign of getting older. Until mine heals up, I'm using a Horton Yukon X that belongs to one of my younguns. I brought it to work this past Saturday and played with it off and on all day. Shooting it from a rest, it was doing pretty good. Only problem was the front sight kwpt coming loose. Pliers fixed that though! Anyhoo, yesterdqy morning I missed a doe inside of 25yds, standing plumb broadsided. Went right under her and scared the heck outa her. I got back home and took it out back to recheck it's zero. It's shooting all over the place! It won't shoot to the same place twice in a row. Everything seems to be tight. Front site isn't coming loose and it hasn't been dropped or knocked around. I was shootig the same broadhead that is was sighted in with but after getting frustrated yesterday afternoon, I tried every type of broadhead I own plus field tips. Same results!

Anybody got any ideas? I don't know if the whole thing may be site related but do ya'll have any idea how hard it would be to mount a scope to this thang?

Thanks in advance,
HWD

I had the same problem with a Horton Summit ( 1 week old ), turns out that one of the limbs was split.  3 1/2 weeks later I got it back.  I still cant shoot worth a darn thou.  Just a thought.

You may want to check you arrows. Tuning the broadheads can help. Are you hand cocking it or using a cocking device? If it isn't cocked perfectly straight can cause it to shot all over too. Found that out the hard way. My 2 cents.

Last nite, I went out to our Gander Mountain Store. The guy who runs the archery dept has been around this bidness for a day or two so I feel like I can trust him. After explaining my problems, bow wise as well as shoulder wise, he asked how I was cocking the bow. I told him I was leaning over, grabbing the string and pulling it up to cock it. I was told if when cocking it this way, I pulled harder with one arm than the other, I could be getting the string off center and it's trying to straighten back out on release, thus slinging the arrow every which way. At first, I was a little flusterated(heck "I "couldn't be the problem) but after thinking about it a minute or two I realized he's probably right. I'm pulling harder with my right arm to compensate for the lack of strength in the left.
If the rain will slack off or if I can shoot from my building, tonite, I'm gonna check it out to see if using the cocking device(rope and hooks) will help my problem. I'll get back with ya'll and let ya know what happens.

Yep I have. Left shoulder is messed up so I tried to "horse" the string harder with the right arm. Made for some interesting shots until I figured out what I was doing. Like you said "I" can't be the problem, but in most cases if you start flinging arrows all over creation....its the first place to look. Especially if ya get in a hurry to get in the stand. Learning to slow do saves a lot of headaches. IMHO!!!

That's funny, right there!
Same here! Bum left shoulder and trying to screw up the right one pulling back on this thing! That's ME! Flinging is an understatement! I had to move up to 10 yards to keep hitting the target!

I was starting to think that carrying a sack of rocks would be more productive for a while. I got it straightened out though. Patience is a good thing. Once I quit beating myself up then it started to fall into place.

Got a new recurve bow a few days ago...now that has been experience. Still working on getting that thing sighted in. Standing 10 yds off and I'm barely able to keep it on the target. Got a hold of the dealer and he said its the pillar inside of the Dial-A-Range is wrong. Apparently Horton sent some out with the wrong length pillar inside. Makes 'em shoot off by 6 inches at 10 yds. If I keep my cool I think it'll work.

Bud...you hang in there. It'll work for you. Just stop trying to muscle it when you cock it and I bet it will work a lot better!!!

I had the same problem with my Horton Summit. I am now using a PSE Copperhead and am very happy with it. Cheaper and more reliable.

Rope cocker is the answer.  Barring that, put white out on string while at rest on both rail edges and then check after cocking it to see if marks are equally spaced from rail.

A common lack of bhead accuracy is due to too low of FOC, easy fix is heavier bheads or try mechanicals.
Good luck!!

I got one of those rope cocking devices with the two small pulleys from Cabelas for around $27.00. I used it today for the first time and only wish I had done it sooner. I can cock the 175lb Hunter/Tenpoint with minimum strain and the crossbow string is aligned perfectly. The product was an Excalibur mfg.

You might try mechanical broadheads if the string puller device does not help. With mine I can normally shoot just about the same POI either with field or broadheads using mechanicals at 25-30 yds. Oh yeah, took plenty of deer with that setup too including my biggest 10 pt. to date.
