The Kruncher Call... operates under the idea that you use it when the deer are nervous and they will calm down.  I think you could use it a litmus test; anyone who buys one is an idiot.

Oh my.... thats funny right there!  My wife came home the other day, asked me what I was up to. I said killin' flies. She asked did you get any?  Yup, a male and two females. Really, how can you tell? Well, he was on the beer can, the other two were on the phone.

I remember seeing camo outfits for boys in a couple of catalogs a few years ago.  The problem was they had deer heads with antlers printed on the chest.

Advertisements that show one person single climbing where there should be at least one back up.

Why is the mountain climber always featured coming uphill.  I want to know how the camera man got 50 lbs of camera and 25 pounds of battery up in front of the "hero" being filmed wearing skin tights and packing only 4 ounces of water and a single granola bar.

In all of the survival shows while some idiot is eating wild onion and raw fish seasoned with dirt, what is the prodution crew having for lunch out at the commisary truck.

maybe this is totally lame... needles, the eye of them... the effort it usually takes me to get some thread through them is rediculous... I usually need a toothpick or another needle to force the string through the first needle to even get started sewing

I could probably feed the string through the fabric with all that effort!

also underarmor is making camo patterned cold weather gear now.... I'll probably buy some so I will eventually fail that litmus test (but they look cool)

dukkiler, you'll like this since you're a shotgunner

in Missouri we have to put a sticker on the stock of the gun that is blaze orange and reads "be safe" or some crap when turkey hunting.... I don't remember exactly what the deal is but that's it in a nutshell.... use a sticker to magically stop idiocy, also look at the orange sticker with your peripheral vision while shooting in low light around other people doing the same WEARING THE SAME ORANGE COLOR it's so brilliant that only the conservation department could dream it up

Camo even for outer clothing is primarily for the hunter not for the game. Folks got along just fine hunting without it for hundreds of years. I just accept that it is for my eyes not those of the game I might hunt and so buy what looks good to me. If I like the looks of it then what do I care how well the game likes it. If I do my job right they will never know I'm there with or without the camo.

Self defense handguns with leg tie downs as in tactical in calibers that would be marginal at best for the intended game...like a 9mm anything, hollow point high vel cartridges with several magazines while bear hunting.  I dunno...maybe its just me...I get nervous when a guy dresses in tack gear just in case...of what exactly???

The "Butt Out" plastic thingy for gutting deer.  That's lame.

Most everything that Yogi Berra is quoted to have said http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/y/yogi_berra.html.  Just throwing some humor in here...cause I can't think of any others.

Auto Makers designing and building auto/truck gasoline tanks with electrically energized pumps inside!  Mine caught onfire in an empty tank.  I am still here to write about it though.

Now THAT is funny.  Not a product but a "huh" situation... I once hunted with a guy that couldn't stop talking on a stalk hunt. He had some kind of compulsion to be my "tour guide". I finally had to tell him to SHUT UP. His feelings were hurt....

Ther are two that come to mind....#1 was bags of freeze dried deer droppings that you were to place arouund your stand.???    If ther are no natural  droppings where your hunting.....  YOUR IN THE WRONG PLACE.   #2  was a folding bush that you carried in your pack then used for concealment to sneak up on your quarry..........?

muzzle break on a rim fire

I've got a muzzle brake on my Ruger 10/22 again.  I had to take it off for a while because the State of California didn't understand why I wanted it on my rifle, either.  I moved to Oklahoma, where the powers that be don't seem as anal or uptight about what my guns look like as those in California, and one of the first things I did admist the unpaking was to re-instal my muzzle brake on my 10/22.

And while this may be hard to believe, the thing actually does work.  It does reduce muzzle jump.  That isn't a big deal in the hunting field, but it can be in timed-fire target shooting events that involve a rapid fire phase.  It seems to dampen barrel vibration, too.  I know one thing -well, two, actually:  my 10/22 shoots tighter groups with a broader range of ammo with the brake installed than it does without it, and it is a heck of a lot louder under the covered firing line at the target range that I frequent.  The former is a nice thing, the latter is not so much.  The former is a nice enough thing that I tolerate the latter.

If I do my job right they will never know I'm there with or without the camo.

I totally agree with the above, and here's a sampling of why...............

During the 2008 primative arms season here in Oklahoma, I killed my first ever whitetail deer.  I was on the ground, leaning against a tree, and dressed like a freakin' orange popsicle from the waist up.

Shortly after sunrise, a group of deer came in to view and proceeded to lazily feed on fallen acorns.  The buck I shot was about 150 yards off when I first caught a glimpse of it.  It kept coming closer and closer.  It would looked right at me every now and then, sniff the air a bit, and then get back to munching on acorns, and the process would repeat, with the buck coming closer the whole time.  I just stood still.

Finally, when the buck was 20 yards away, I couldn't stand it anymore and killed it.

I went back to that same spot the following day, once again looking like an international orange popsicle from the waist up, with pretty much the same action taking place with the doe I shot.

This year's hunting didn't go as planned.  Work kept me out of the field throughout the primative season and most of the modern gun season.

When I did get to go, I took my 10 year old son on his first deer hunt as an observer.  We were both dressed like orange popsicles from the waist up.  I went to the same spot where I'd killed my deer in 2008 during the primative arms season.

An hour and a half after sunrise, with my son feeling cold and impatient whispering about how badly my "spot" sucked and how we should try another, we heard leaves crunching behind us.

He turned around slowly and started tugging at the sleave of my bright orange jacket, whispering, "Its a deer.  And its right here.  Get you gun and shoot it."

"Buck or doe?"

"Doe."

"Okay.  Now be still and shhhhhhhhh."

I didn't bother to turn around.  I kept looking at my hillside in front of me.  I could hear the occassional footstep behind, thanks to the fallen leaves.

"NO, Dad.  You don't understand.  It is RIGHT HERE looking RIGHT AT ME.  Kill it.," my son said again, in a whisper.

"Shhhhhh. Be still. When she turns away and isn't looking at you, let me know."  I understood more than the kid thought I did.  I understood that if I moved with that deer looking right at us, she might well bolt off without me being able to get a good shot off at her.

Well, she eventually did turn and lazily went about sniffing the ground.  I eventually turned around, too.

When it was over, I asked my son where the deer was when he saw her first and where she was when she finally turned around.  She entered the picture about 35 yards behind us.  She kept advancing toward us, keeping an eye on my son who was keeping an eye on her.  When she finally turned, she was mere feet away, rather than yards.  She was less than 50 yards from me when I first laid eyes on her.

All we had to be was real still and downwind to get that close to the object of desire.  We didn't have to look like a real tree or a mossy oak to do it.

I'm an amatur whitetail hunter.  Still, it doesn't seem to me that their ability to see the red / orange light spectrum is any better than the blacktails and mulies that I DO have experience with.  That deer that my son spotted came within feet of us as we sat there looking like two frozen desserts (and feeling like two frozen desserts that morning) sitting on a deadfall.

I don't see how camo would changed things for the better.

I disagree.
You cant accuratly conclude this theory with a single scenario you experienced out of your whole life.
being that I have the time to be in the woods EVERY SINGLE WEEKEND YEAR ROUND, some days in camo & some days in plain urban clothing, I know for a fact that if a deer sees you, & your sitting still, its generaly because its your outline that gets you busted. I field study wildlife as much if not more than forest service or wildlife biologists. so much so, that rarely one of them have answers to my questions about the deer & other wildlife in my area. I have to find out for myself & then inform them of my studies, theorys & conclusions. I dont know what they do on a daily basis but it would seem that they sit around all day with there thumbs up their asses.
any way,
I have had deer step right over my legs, walk right past me, eat off the bushes I used for a blind & had more close encounters with all wildlife in camo than when I was wearing solid color pants & tee shirt.

Camo in an area of similarity works on the eye of a deer along with most other game & non game animals & was invented for that specific purpose. Allot of camo companies now a days are meerly making camo patterns that look apealing to the eye of the hunter, I will agree with that, but not that camo doesnt work on the eye of a deer.
Sure people have harvested deer in jeans & a white tee but they couldnt have easily gotten into even a quarter of the scenarios that a hunter in a good camo could.
more so now a days, most have a strong belief that camo is made for bow hunting.

Camo even for outer clothing is primarily for the hunter not for the game. Folks got along just fine hunting without it for hundreds of years.

yeah, because there was no need for camo back then due to of the vast amount of game to hunt unlike the lower numbers of today. folks went without game wardens hundreds of years ago also but now they are one of the most important things in hunting today. times chance, people & animals adapt & evolve to compensate for these changes.
That & why need camo back then when the gold minors had trouble keeping the deer out of their camps. I still have that problem when camping in the sierras. heck, you didnt even need a gun back then either, you could hit em over the head with a hammer while they scrounge through your camp site.

JPSHELTON,
In your situation, of course camo serves no purpose to someone wearing solid pattern blaze orange! duh. ::)
It was your outline the deer saw.
the deer just didnt care much that you were there.

in conclution,
Why would you even waste mony on camo if you truly believed it doesnt work & thought you could get by without it?
greybeard, you said you buy what camo looks good to you... let me know what place you took in the fashion show.  :D
he he he. ;D

OK, back to things that make you go huh?
how about, people who think camo doesnt work on deer... HUH??? ;)
especialy those who pair it with solid blaze orange outer wear. ::)

also underarmor is making camo patterned cold weather gear now.... I'll probably buy some so I will eventually fail that litmus test (but they look cool)

The camo underarmor makes sense to me as I cover a lot of ground when hunting.  Often by noon on cool fall days the underarmor is the only layer that is needed.  Peel down to your long underarmor and your still camo'd.
