coyote trap with deer guts
« on: July 07, 2009, 02:00:10 PM »
Have you ever set a coyote trap around a deer gut pile?  I have never trapped, but think it would work well.  The human scent left around a gut pile does not seem to bother the coyotes around here.  The pile is gone the next day.  How did you set the trap?

turn it into a "trash pile set", by covering with leaves, which keeps the birds off it, and laying brush into lanes so you are guiding where the critter walks.
Lay a trap in every lane created by the brush.
These brush lanes don't even need to be knee high
you can make 4-5 lanes
This is a great way to catch bobcats too
Most guys stake a beaver carcass or road kill deer quarter down for this set.
Hope this helps

You need to check your regulations before setting up traps near visisble or large baits. I don't know what state your in but here in WI we can't set right on visible bait. Backing traps sets off the bait should also help you just target the coyotes and not catch birds or other unwanted animals.

Here in Ohio you are not allowed to have any flesh baits exposed. Keeps birds of prey from getting caught. Worm

Exposed baits are not legal in most states.
Setting on them will cause you a lot of problems.

5 gallon bucket sealed (meat inside)with holes in it is legal in most areas. Also bone piles are legal in most no flesh areas. Just cook the meat off the bone in a washtub and use the bones in a set. Blood sets are also legal in most areas.
Good Luck

Gonna have to question my local warden about that on monday.  Our law says no bait visible from the air so not sure how the 5 gallon bucket even closed will be seen

Always best to talk to the warden my friend. Everywhere is different with the laws. As Bogmaster said could lead to a lot of problems.

If you do set it and it is legal, set your traps away from the bait on some high spots. This will get the coyotes when they circle and visually check the bait. Even gets ones who are scared off by human scent on the bait itself.

One can utilize large baits like deer guts by setting way out around the perimeter. Many  coyotes in my area are wary of large baits and will circle around the area for a few days and will come upon the sets as they are circleing. I have caught hundreds of coyotes using that method. A majority of time the guts or large bait doesn't last long enough for coyotes to eat any, scavenger birds like ravens generally clean them up quick. Ravens, like coyotes are quite wary of gut piles too unless they are out in the open where they can fly over and better see possible danger. If the guts are in the thick woods they might be there for quite some time.  Asa

I've bought some snares and was wondering if a similar set-up, (with the lanes), would work with the snares.

I also have a large pile of brush that I've piled up with my backhoe. I left a deer carcass there last year, not trapping and they drug it off the pile 3 times, behind the pile away from where I could see them.

What's my best shot on how to set up the snares?

I didn't want to use leg hold traps since my dog ventures around. If I have to, I can pen her up if needed while trapping the coyotes.

Marlin, your snares will work fine. Those lanes are the major travel ways in and out,and snares set on them should produce.

Make sure you set up stops on the snares the size of your dog's neck. I run aquarium tubing to shield the animal from the wire and not tear him up. May want to do that as well to keep the dog from cutting up his neck.
Good luck

Best bet of all--tie up your dog till you are done with the yotes.A dog knocking down or getting into your equipment, will not help you in taking the coyotes.
What state are you located in?

Will do on tying her up or penning her in the barn. She doesn't mind it too much. I don't have to worry about her during the day. She's a back door watch dog. She sort of reminds me of the Clampet Family's blood hound.

I'm in Ohio.
