Ends of a personal eras?
« on: October 22, 2009, 06:01:06 AM »
There have been a few end-of-an-era experiences in my life, like when they replaced a cool world war I blimp base with a zoo near my home town. When they fenced off and posted a creek I used to fish tarpon in. When they put a very restrictive limit on northern pike in my favorite lake. The death of a good friend.

Got any end-of-an-era experiences?

they demolishished the WWI Memorial and Park, it also, had stuff for WW! and Korea, to make a parking lot in the old town square. they had statues, names of local dead, cannons, and machine guns. the park had tables under huge oaks where i would go with my grandfather and he wouild join all the "OLD TIMERS" in playing checkers or they would gather in groups tell stories and whittle. ( i sure miss those days)

I remember that many people were mad as heck at the city fathers but they claimed it would rejuvenate the city. it did nothing of course and the people have lost an important reminder of the history and sacrifice of the citizens.

Yea, lots of them.

1- Doing business the the old fasioned way,
the way your GRANDFATHER taught you to!

2- Respect from the younger generation & respect for the older
    genrtation.

3- Working for what you want or need instead of waiting for a
    handout.

4- Being able to leave your car & your house unlocked while you
    were away.

5- Getting punished at school for doing something wrong and
then having your parents call the school and thanking them
    for doing it!

6- Being able to buy a firearm (provided you were of legal age)
with out having to do a back ground check.

7- Having a government that was OF THE PEOPLE, FOR THE
    PEOPLE & BY THE PEOPLE!!!

8- Being able to let your kids stand out along the road in the
morning, waiting for the bus without the fear that someone
    was going to kidnap them!

9- GOD, ain't that enought?
I could go on & on & on, there could be no end to this!

I'm a native born Southerner.

That means ANYTHING here in Georgia that is even remotely connected to the civil war and shows the South in a good light is destroyed, taken down or relegated to some undesired thing for the enlightened people of the world to look at with hatred.

Whatever is left over is sold to the highest bidder by our wonderful elected leaders.

When I had to sell my dirt bike because my Carpal Tunnel made it too painful to ride.
When I sold my saxophones.
When we were forced to sell the house we built when my wife lost her job.
However selling the dirt bike led to me getting involved with Jeeping, which I continue to enjoy and has made me  wonderful friends.
Selling my horns allowed me to focus more on the bass and actually let me work more.
And although I'm sorry I sold the house, at least I was able to get out of it without losing any money, and it led me to the Memphis area, where I was able to get my life-saving liver transplant.
So I guess these things taught me that sometime change is good, sometimes it's bad, and sometimes it's neither.

I agree with all these posts. Having seen 74 winters, I have witnessed the loss of common courtesy, respect and dignity in society. I have seen a tremendous loss of my rights. Arrogance abounds everywhere. On a personal level, the worst day of my life was May 31, 2005, when I lost my Donna to cancer. It ended a major era in my life. I haven't been the same since. I became a hermit and avoid interacting with people in person any more than I have to.
I am glad to be able to come into this forum and share ideas with some good folks from all over the world.
I am glad everymorning that I wake up.
I am glad for my children and grandchildren. What a mess we are leaving them. Hopefully, their inheritance will help.
I am glad that I can still go into the woods, even if its just to sit and remember. Such is life.

Watchin the butcher cut my steaks off a side of beef while I watched. Sittin on the wagon seat lookin at the team's (Slim and Shorty) butts, smellin the horse sweat and leather while grand dad, and dad harvested corn by hand. Playin under the cotton wagon, while mom and grandma picked cotton. BY HAND!
Buyin a good horse with a check when there was no money in the bank, and callin the banker and tellin him I'd be in in a few days to sign the note, or sell the horse and pay it off. And the banker sayin ok.
Buyin stuff on a hand shake and everyone keepin their word.
Watchin someone gettin the hell beat out of'em after talkin ruff to, or in front of, a woman or young girl. A ass kickin, shortly followed by a shotgun weddin, and the man actually STEPPIN UP, and stayin, and makin it work.
Yes mam, and no mam, and yes sir, and no sir. Doin what someone said they'd do. Honor MEANIN SOMETHIN. Dignity!
My bow legged Cherokee Grandfather, and Father that everyone says I look like. My grandmothers' homemade biscuits. A car I could work on.  Common courtesy, common sense, common decency, common people, common good. Wars fought to be won. Taking responsibility for yourself and deeds. The GOSPEL SAYING WHAT IT "ACTUALLY" SAYS! Preachers who worked, and visited. Christians that dressed like Christians, talked like Christians, and acted like Christians. Family get togethers. RESPECT OF THE ELDERLY! LOYALTY TO FAMILY! Loyalty to friends. Loyalty to country. Standing up for what was right, whether it was popular or not. Stoppin and helpin a stranger. A stranger stoppin and helpin me or mine. Cane pole fishin. A good horse on trail, or pushin cattle to another pasture. Good men standing behind me, and know when life was about to get simple that they'd stay hooked till it was over and were glad to be there. A president, or a senator, or a congressman, or a state representative, or a governor, or a mayor, or a police chief, or a police officer, you could be proud of instead of suspicious of. A youthful momma showin up to help other room mothers with my class party at school. My innocence, when I thought the world was a better place than it actually was, and when grown ups could be trusted.
Are ya'll tired yet? I got more. ;)

You dang right we want more, and here is somemore of it.

Gas at 22.9 cents a gal and you could get a 2 cent truckers discoun't

For every 10 gallons you got a free gift

When you stopped at a gas station someone pumped your gas for you along with checking your oil and washing your windshield at no extra charge.

If your FATHER or GRANDFATHER walked or drove down main street everyone you saw would call them by name

Party lines for the telephone---MOHAWAK 293 was ours, three short rings folowed by one long and one short ring

You didn't have to worry about points on your driving record, just don't get two reckless driving tickets

My first new truck cost $4100.00 with most of the bells and whistles in 1974

You could always count on your neighbor for a helping hand when needed

At the general store, no cash no problem, just put it on my bill

Two cent deposit on your soda bottles

Almost everyone went to church on SUNDAY

No one worked on SUNDAY

No stores were open on SUNDAY

Black & white TVs

Just before me there were no TVs  1958

Before all the elders passed on you always attended the family reunion

Drive in theaters-- we have one of the very few left in the country just a few miles from our house--go at least once a year
with the kids

Only bars served booze

All the kids from all the grades 1-12 rode the same bus

All the great old radio shows--I won't even start to name them
I think that has been done on here already somewhere

Staying out most of the night gigging frogs

Poddle skirts - mid 50s through the early 60s, mini skirts - early 60s through the mid 70s, HOT PANTS!!! Late 60s through the mid 70s

Hippies -- TUNE IN, TURN ON , & DROP OUT

DISCO---Thank Heaven!

I will take a break now.

Your turn!

Rites of passage... everyone did not have the same priviledges, they were earned.

Gun cabinet getting passed down signalling the end of the hunt for a family elder.

Doesn't this stuff just take a lot out of you?

My father-in-law's death was the end of an era for me. The farm is a sad place since he died.

Working at the forge with my grandpa.

Riding to the store in the wagon behind old Blackjack the mule with my grandpa.

Being able to go just about anywhere near where I lived and being INVITED to hunt.

A time when working men didn't need contracts.

A time when the sheriff said "just take care of it and call me".

A time when "gay" had an altogether different meaning.

A time when folks respected a church building whether they went or not.

Like Longtom, I could go on a while.

Both the mule and grandpa are long gone, but I still miss them both.

When my oldest son moved away with my oldest grandaughter.  It was pretty much the end of the most important thing in my life.

Yes sir, without a doubt that plays a big part in it.

The world needs people to hate and these days if you're a white, heterosexual male, who thinks for himself, doesn't drink the Obama and far left Kool-aid actually reads and understands the truths and knows the lies...and MOST important FROM THE SOUTH.

He is by THEIR definition EVIL and must be destroyed. They use terms like "inclusive" and "hate-free" yet THEY hate me and my people and what my people stand for and believe in. At this moment their's is a very REAL war of GENOCIDE aimed at Southerners.

What folks from other parts of the country DON'T or WON'T understand is that we're just the begining. First it will be Southern flags and Southern ideals attacked and destroyed, but their aim and goal is to destroy this entire nation.

They want to see Mexican flags, Japanese flags, european style socialism in government and lifestyle. They want to have gay teachers telling your kids it's alright to do what gay people do and live the lifestyle.

They want to say it's OK to NOT have a father in a family, that it's perfectly normal for a man to have a kid and abandon it and go do it as many times as he wants. But, don't worry because Hillary Clinton and her ilk will come along and raise the kids because she want's the "it takes a village to raise a child" mantra to be the only way to do things here. She and others like her won't accept the fact it takes a MAN and WOMAN who live in the traditional AMERICAN way to ensure that children grow up to become healthy well addjusted contributing adults.

It's no coincidence that over 70% of all men and women locked up in adult facilties and over 85% of kids locked up in juvenile facilities come from homes that have NO FATHER.

I know this is a long winded responce to your question, but in the end it won't just be the South that disapears from this country. The entire country will disapear and what reamins will be little better than a third world nation.

I like Hermit in 2004 lost my wife to cancer and like he my life has changed much the same as he. I am 70 and he is 74, I know where he is coming from. I have had many changes in my life but nothing comes close to that life altering event.
