Watchin the butcher cut my steaks off a side of beef while I watched. Sittin on the wagon seat lookin at the team's (Slim and Shorty) butts, smellin the horse sweat and leather while grand dad, and dad harvested corn by hand. Playin under the cotton wagon, while mom and grandma picked cotton. BY HAND!
Buyin a good horse with a check when there was no money in the bank, and callin the banker and tellin him I'd be in in a few days to sign the note, or sell the horse and pay it off. And the banker sayin ok.
Buyin stuff on a hand shake and everyone keepin their word.
Watchin someone gettin the hell beat out of'em after talkin ruff to, or in front of, a woman or young girl. A ass kickin, shortly followed by a shotgun weddin, and the man actually STEPPIN UP, and stayin, and makin it work.
Yes mam, and no mam, and yes sir, and no sir. Doin what someone said they'd do. Honor MEANIN SOMETHIN. Dignity!
My bow legged Cherokee Grandfather, and Father that everyone says I look like. My grandmothers' homemade biscuits. A car I could work on. Common courtesy, common sense, common decency, common people, common good. Wars fought to be won. Taking responsibility for yourself and deeds. The GOSPEL SAYING WHAT IT "ACTUALLY" SAYS! Preachers who worked, and visited. Christians that dressed like Christians, talked like Christians, and acted like Christians. Family get togethers. RESPECT OF THE ELDERLY! LOYALTY TO FAMILY! Loyalty to friends. Loyalty to country. Standing up for what was right, whether it was popular or not. Stoppin and helpin a stranger. A stranger stoppin and helpin me or mine. Cane pole fishin. A good horse on trail, or pushin cattle to another pasture. Good men standing behind me, and know when life was about to get simple that they'd stay hooked till it was over and were glad to be there. A president, or a senator, or a congressman, or a state representative, or a governor, or a mayor, or a police chief, or a police officer, you could be proud of instead of suspicious of. A youthful momma showin up to help other room mothers with my class party at school. My innocence, when I thought the world was a better place than it actually was, and when grown ups could be trusted.
Are ya'll tired yet? I got more.
