Reloading Win.64gr.PP
« on: October 22, 2009, 02:43:53 AM »
I have a Browning Stainless Stalker in .223 WSSM. I bought this last year and had very good success with two smaller coyotes with 55 grain Nosler CT's on top of Varget. A friend sent me a picture of a coyote shot in New York state that weighed 115#. I live just over the line from New York. I have shot Coyotes in the 55-65# with results that were not steller with a .222. So now I want to upgrade again with a better bullet and have chosen the Winchester 64 grain Power Point. I can not find any reloading data using either Varget or IMR 4350 for this bullet and I am wondering if someone has a pet load they would be willing to share. Coyote season opens Nov.15 here.

Did you look at the Hodgdon website? They should have some info.

Did you ever weigh those coyotes? A few years ago we got 'top dog' with a 39.5 lb coyote out of about 20 taken. Some guys don't get a bear that weighs #115.

WOW!! 115# coyote! One that size would be more dangerous than a bear. I'd go to the online Hodgdon/IMR site and check for data in that weight range. At least it would be a good place to start.
Good Luck,

I'm sorry if there was a coyote that weighed 115 lb it would be a far and away world record.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coyote

http://www.kiwifoto.com/galleries/mammals/coyote/

THese sources say the record coyote was 74.74 lbs. I'm not to sure I believe the 74 pounder is a true coyote.

Sometimes the coyotes breed with wild dogs. The Coydogs are frequently larger than a coyote, but have never seen or heard of even a Coydog in that size range. Although the northern coyotes are generally larger than those in the south and west. Of course I'll readily admit, the is still a lot I haven't seen in nigh on to 70 yrs.

Coydogs?  Now that's a new one for me.  Around here they've always been called dogotes.  Just a regional thing I guess.  Even at that I've never seen one close to 75# much less 115.  Around here they're better fed than some domestic animals.

"Dogotes" huh? Not that's another new one on me as well. Yeah, got to be a regional thing. Around here a 40-60# coyote/coydog/dogote, would be HUGE!

:D J.W. I use 64 grain WW in my big .22's. I started with Serria's data for 63 grain Semi pt.  Just a thought... :)
