An on-line friend had a buddy show up for a squirrel hunt carrying this. I think I know what it is, but I'll withhold my thoughts til I get some opinions. The shotgun is an H&R and 12 guage. Barrel is 52 ", I think he said.

Deer hunting gun for population reduction in urban/ sensitive areas. They are used in my area for this in a baited site with downward angled shot, mostly at night, from what I've read seems to be highly effective alltought they do have to move from site to site as the deer get disturbed in an area.

yep yur right i forget i think browning made a screw in choke type of deal for guys to use it made your gun this long , also could be a card gun lot of unlimited turkey /card guns look like this

seems like a few years ago i read a article about a guy produceing guns like that cuz of the noise reduction im thinking maybe.i think he was shooting nuisance geese or sumthing like that with them.if memory serves me, his guns actually had fiber glass barrel extentions. the extensions were larger than the actuall bore diameter and were just in place for the noise factor.regardless that is a interesting gun, let us know if you get a more expanded storry on its info.

What HillBill said, plus they used a reduced powder load for less noise. If they missed they would smack the deer with the barrel

Well my guess was that it was something called a "Dory Gun". A relic from the days of market hunting. The idea was it was strapped to a row boat "dory" and rowed withing killing distance of a flock of ducks/geese while still on the water and fired. The only "dory gun" I ever heard of was supposedly an 8 guage a friend had spotted hanging on a restaurant wall in new england.
Now I'm hearing from the guy that posted this on another site, that this is something called a "metro barrel". Used for noise abaitment in urban control situations.

What you call a “Dory Gun” is actually a Punt Gun. They were eight gauge or larger bore guns and used by commercial waterfowl hunters to shoot multiple birds while they were resting on the water. The guns were to heavy to carry so were mounted on boats. There use in this country was banned in 1918.

It does look like a smaller version of a punt gun. Photo too small for my eyes. I remember an old timer on the St. Lawrence River telling me about them. They did mount them in a boat and used shot, nails, anything they could find. It was black powder. After the waterfowl came in and settled, they would make a noise to get the birds to lift off the water, then fire. He told me he got as much as 27 birds with one shot. I recall seeing only one in a boat house many years ago and I think it weighed over 45#. Obviously, the one the guy is holding isn't that big, but impressive none the less.

i heard of some 5 foot custom turky shoot guns

my neighbor has a 3 foot 1100 remington [custom barrel]

said he out shoots most 5 foot guns at turkey shoots in middle georgia

When I was a kid, there was one in the Shelburn museum in Vt., it was mounted to the bow of a sneakboat about 15ft long, the gun I recall was either 0 or 00 gauge, and it had a metal pistol grip, I can't recall exact length but it was HUGE, it seems to me the barrel was somewhere in the neighborhood of 8-10 feet. I would love to hear that go BANG!!

there is a real (old antique) punt gun hanging in my club (Bass River Rod & Gun Club). It is huge and has a pivoting attachment something like an oarlock attached at what would be the balance point where it was put into the gunwale of the punt boat. It is much larger than 8 gauge and at least eight feet long. I will get a picture of it and some day may be savvy enough to post it....<><....

They have a much longer barrel on the punt gun in the NYS State museum. That was for commerical duck hunting. You row up to the flock and blast them all in the water. Idea is to get as many ducks as you can with 1 shot.

mike yur on it thats what i was thinking about when i thought browning made them , metrogun tom knapp had one a few years back in his shooting expo he did here locally , if you get a chance to see him hes a blast to watch

Yes there is a company that makes the bbl extension for use in urban areas for shooting the geese that do not migrate... around here I believe they are even using them to put youth goose hunts togeather because of all the nuesience geese. I thought I did a search on them a while back and they can be had for around $100 for 870's and H&R's. Kurt

If someone could remember who makes them for the H&R shotguns, I would be indebted to them. I would buy one of those in a NY minute just to have hanging on the wall in the living room, not to mention showing up on the trap line a the club would definately be a eye catcher, I am going to email metro gun and see If I could get one for the ole H&R. Are the choke threads on the H&R shotgun the same as remington 870? I heard that they were anyone know for sure?

It would have to be for some reason. Sound reduction or recoil management makes the most sense.
with a 12 ga 36" barrels is the max for velocity. After that the barrel becomes drag. Much like a 16" barrel is max speed for a 22LR.

hastings makes a metro barrel extension in 12 gauge to fit most of the choke threads available , they are 32 inches long and ported and still accept a choke tube at the end of the barrel the one i bought was $175 and it does work well

My dad has a single shot with a very long barrel and a scope on it. The guy said he made the barrel and used it for what is know around here as turkey shoots (Shooting paper). Has a scope on it. The guy said he done so good with it they wouldn't let him use it anymore. I don't think it patterns that good. But dad said for $125 it was cool to look at.

saw one once it was stamped "texas ranger 12 guage" it only had a 48 in barrel.
