just another day in paridise hunting foxes with the 17's

took  reloader aka (scott) fox hunting today. the first stand was an experiment that worked a lot better than we thought. the calling was good but the shooting came up short. we had a rather pi$$ed off fox show up rather quickley. he came in so fast we couldn't get a shot at him. then he was down right inconsiderate and he would not stand still so we could shoot him. finally he had enough of us, he turned and departed the same way he had come in. he did make one small mistake though,he stopped to take one more look, it was a fatal one. the 17/30 carbine loaded with 13.1 gr of n120 and a 25 gr hor hp hit him knocking him down. about 60 seconds later i looked back at him and he was standing there looking at me. well.... can't have that so i took another shot, just as i did my shooting stick slipped off a rock. the last we saw of that fox was him heading over the next hill. after calling a halt to all the noise and screaming we realized it was not the same fox. the fox had followed the first one's trail and was smelling the dead foxes butt. some fox just have no respect for the dead.
well the sun was up and someone told the foxes it was time to take a nap. six calls later we finaly called another fox in. we were calling a very large rock face that was about 400 yds long by 70 feet tall. about 3 minutes into the call the fox came scurring along the wall about 2/3 of the way up. it looked as though he was ready to go over the top and out of sight . again the 17/30 carbine barked and off the rock he went. he ended up stuck behind a small bush, sorry no pics.
we decided to go to another spot about 15 miles away. as we were driving along i noticed a fox off to one side about 100 yds out. after comming to a stop and being amazed it was still standing there. the 17/30 carbine did its thing again,bang-wham down it went. after a couple dry stands we finally got lucky. about 2.5 minutes in to the call a fox approached from my left. it came all the way to the call and did a war danced around the caller. about that time reloader's 17/222 (thats right he's hooked)slapped the fox just a little far back. it made no difference as the first shot was fatal. we moved about 3/4 of a mile and made some more noise, it worked. this time the fox attacked our position from reloaders left flank. again reloader(scott) was up to the task, bang-wham and down. we were up against a time line as reloader had an appointment at 1:00 and it was now 12:33 and we were 45 minutes from town. we decided to make one more call, just down the two track was an old homestead with a wind mill. now this has always been a good producer over the years. we sat up on both sides of the two track road. reloader had a bush to hide by and me... i became my own bush. within 2 minutes the fox showed up again trying to out flank reloader. he was having none of that, he put a 25 gr hp in its mid section.
so there you have it, bob 3, scott 3 and foxes 1 escapee. oh well we got to leave some for seed.
the jack was the first blood rrawn by scotts new 17/222 rem.
