range day with the .50 longrifle
« on: October 05, 2003, 01:37:59 PM »
well I found out a few things today......my rifle hates pillow ticking. So - I have some for sale if anyone's interested.
I had picked up some denim at Wally World - .019 and .024. I cut these into 1" strips, lubed Dutch style 1-5.
Over 70 grains of powder, .490 balls with the thick denim made for 3" groups at 100meters. The .490's and the .495's with the thin denim did the same with charges of 70 and 75 grs 2F Swiss. So it appears to be coming together for me with this rifle. Cant wait to go shooting agin !!!!!!

Hello Mr 4Toes:  may i suggest you make yout ticking onto a little haversack,  or ball bags, or a flint wallet, or just save it.  it may work in your next rifle.   george

Yep, I've found the heavier stuff to work better also.
        3" is darn good t4t.
When I mix I use a tablespoon measure.and only do about 4-5 strips 18" long(that's as big as my drying surface)that's lot's a shootin! Maybe tweek the lube a bit,mix 1-5 dip one strip, add one water dip one strip, add one water dip one strip. Now ya got 3 strips each different 1-5 thru 7. see?

Another tweek I do, is the tween shot swab,I use 22 cal cleaning patches damp with spit. Why? cause ya can git a big bag of precut's that are the same for cheap,an spit's free. Dutch say's once down and back.Darn good lesson, but not alway's! Condition's aren't always the same, cool breezy mornings are not the same as baking hot afternoon sun. I've learned to go by feel, sometimes an extra little pump near that bottom crud is needed and some times it needs a hole nuther patch, maybe one really wet followed by a dry.
I want "field" condition's also, the only tyme I've needed a quick follow-up shot is hunting groups of squirril. I just cain't talk'm into getting in a row for one clean shot!
Cut the ticking up into 2x2 squares,,makes dandy cleaning patch!

well I'll be trying all that stuff in the mornin - I'm planning a session with Swiss 1.5. 2, and 3 F , as well as Goex 2F - all with the same ball/patch  combo. Trying to keep the variables down so I know what works. Then I can fine tune from there.
Thanks all for your help and advice - things are finally coming together with this rifle

PS impressed the hell outta some smokeless fellas with this rifle last weekend. They were surprised it'd shoot as good as it did.

Did you guys ever try any of the Southern Bloomer cleaning patches for your ball patches?  I got a bunch of them supposedly for 6mm rifles and they are 1.25" on the side (square).  They look to me like they might work well for balls but I use them for cleaning my .......... inlines.  :)

Mic'd one just now at .016"

Mr Underclocked:  perhaps you will find the sb cleaning patches to be scrap from t-shirts, & etc.   they work fine  for m/l cleaning, but stretch out when loading.  not very good for high power either.  lock, stock & barrel  has some tight woven linen cleaning patches that work for m/l.   old george

:) clock! I tried sum Southern Bloomer ball cleaning patches once. I got a might worried after I tried'm. Didn't seem ta have proper consistancy. Seem's there was dispute tween needing more use and how they are used properly, vrs. some kind of "BigDaddy/Brothers" sight window" styled apperture? Or follow through? I don't know, it had sometihng to do with "looking after"? :-D  I just moved on,(real quick!) to another style/technique of shooting! :)  :D

t4t, good luck too ya, ya should find it soon enough, I went at it differnt, niether of us is right or wrong,, I found me patch/lube proper first then started swappin powders. Believe me friend, what yer doing with the knowledge you have, will make ya a top shooter! Keep ta mind what ya shoot, and make notes on targets, they're good fer study later.

And, ya, you'll most likely out shoot many centerfire feller's found at "the range",,you shoot! they don't! big plus on your/our side!
By the way, a Whitetail buck was taken by a 15yr old in Iowa, with a ML rifle that after drying may well be the new non-typical world record BC!!

I is supposed to get pics and scores on that buck later this evening.  Will try to post that if I'm allowed to do so by my source.  They are being sorta tight-lipped about the thing.

Just a thought that came to me on those Bloomer patches.  Didn't know if they would work or not as they do seem to be tight woven linen.  Be cheap and easy way to get patches if they woulda worked out.  Meant no offense guys, just trying to be helpful.  I won't EVER do that again!    :-D

And, johnt, you lost me somewhere in that sight window thing.

about the buck,, I can understand the tight lip part about it for 2 reasons,
 1. A Pro didn't take it. they been lookin for "that" buck for a few years!.Truth,he didn't just get them horn's this year. Maybe it was a good year, but they knew he was out there!
 2. The "exclusive" story, after "grooming" and edit, should be worth several K

about the bloomer's,, ain't that what southern gal's whare?

Johnt,

What is a Southern Bloomer patch?    Do they have to be used before they are any good for patches?

crow-feather,  he just got the meaning of life, the universe, and my ramblings.

There's just some things that have to be checked and re-checked cuz they might be real important to some folks.   :-)   You know, like the size of them bloomers.
