Topper Question
« on: October 25, 2009, 08:35:45 AM »
I have a chance to buy Topper 158 410 full choke for $100.
My question can I get/will a center fire barrel for this?

Thanks -gary

The 158 was available in 30-30, 22 Hornet and a couple other low pressure rifle chamberings, so if you can get a modern barrel in one of the original chamberings, you should be fine. I've had only one M158, modern barrels would have taken a lot of work to get them to fit, the underlug was a LOT longer, maybe too long to be practical, but others have made the mix of parts work, I think those old cast iron H&R Inc frames had a lot of tolerance in their specs, much more than modern SB2 frames.

Thanks Quick. Maybe I"ll pick it up for the boy, and we'll see where it goes from there. At this price I can't loose. It's a nice clean looking with a red rubber butt. C&C -gary

Quick, when you said

Your meaning is I can pick up a used one, but Remington will not fit one for me correct? -gary

That would be correct, H&R won't fit barrels to any frame made before 1987.

I put a new manufacture .357 Mag barrel on a 158 frame.  It locked up tighter than a gnats butt and shoots great.  No problems at all.  I got the frame from a friend who had three H&R frames, and it locked up best on the Topper.  I'm going to ream it to Maximum and put it on a SB2 frame, and build a short 12 ga. on the Topper frame.
