Remington 760

  I have come up with a 760 pump in a 270 that was supposed to have converted to a lefty gun.The stock has the look of a handmade stock My question is can the Remington safety bar be turned around and made to work from right to left ??
I was told that it was switched when converted.It still ejects like a right handed gun.

IIRC, the safety is identical to those on the 742/7400 rifles and 870/1100 shotguns - and is replaced with an aftermarket LH safety, rather than "reversed".

I installed "Giant Head" safeties in my son's Remingtons, since he's a lefty.

Since the rifle isn't a true mirror conversion to a left-hand version, it would still operate (eject, etc) out the RH side.

Years ago I bought a couple of 760's new. On one of them I had removed the trigger group for some reason and noticed that the housing was drilled from the factory so that the safety could be reversed. I tried it and it worked, no one was left handed so I changed it back. Years latter on a newer version the housing was not drilled the same. If it has been reversed you should be able to change it. If I remember correctly there was a pin, spring,and ball. If you remove the pin, the spring and ball come out and you can remove the safety button and turn it around and insert the ball and spring on the opposite side of the housing.

Remington stopped the procedure due to problems.. The web between the 2 holes for the detent ball would break into the other. The result was a jammed safety.. The fix is not difficult.. drilled the one not in use and fill with aluminum rod. Pin it in place and finish flush.. Clean up the hole in use and reassemble..
