bullets for hunting with 357

I am hunting deer with my 357 for the first time this year. What type of bullet should I use. I don't reload so that is not a option. I have heard about Double Tap ammo is it any good. They offer a 200gr. WFNGC Hardcast bullet. I am in Northeastern KY. I am using open sights so the logest shot I have will be 30 to 40 yards.

I also have heard of Double Tap but have not shot any as I do reload. You might go on the internet and hunt down some reviews on it. At the ranges you're talking about some 158 grain JSP's would work for you. I too hunt with a 357 in a Blackhawk and a Contender and they like different bullets with the Contender liking the 158 JSP's the best.

Remington and Winchester both make a fine 158 JSP hunting round in .357. You don't need anything more than that.

S&W 642: I prefer the 200 gn wnfp or Keith style swc design for the 357. I use a old Winchester factory load that the Double Tap 200 gn load approximates. I prefer the heavier load in a short barrelled 357 and have never recovered a bullet.
The other fellas are right too and even the 158 gn hunting loads by the major manufacturers should handle the job.

Double Tap is good ammo. They make some very good 10mm loads. The 200 grain cast load will offer no expansion and lots of penetration. It would be a good pick for hogs. DT also loads a 158 grain Gold Dot bullet. I think the Gold Dot would be a pretty good choice for deer. It is a tough bullet. Any major brand of 158 grain JSP would get the job done as well.

i use doubletap and i find it to be great ammo, i also use speer gold dot and it is great ammo. if i were you i would choose a non hollow point jacketed round for greater penetration yet still give good expansion, 158 to 180 grain.

If you are thinking about ordering the DT 158 grain Gold Dot keep in mind that it is a JHP. I have ordered several boxes and it is a very good load. Not sure if it will penetrate as deep on game as a 158 grain JSP but I have found the 158 grain Gold Dot JHP to be a tough bullet and it is bonded. It is hotter than most 158 grain factory loads.
