My boy likes the 44 mag
« on: October 30, 2009, 02:10:20 PM »
We went out back to the dirt pile tonight and I had him shooting some 180grn light handloads. He's only 9 and kinda scrawny, but says it doesn't kick too bad. I think with a little more practice he'll be ready for the youth hunt this year. Don't tell him but I'll stoke it up with some 240grn hunting rounds for deer.

Was just curious why you didn't go for the 357 Mag?

That is great he is liking it. Sure beats the 12g shotgun I shot about his age :o I now flinch, even with a .22.

I will say, we have a .44 also. We have been shooting  200gr reloads, medium load. There is no kick. I bought ours when Indiana opened up to pistol cartidge rifles for deer. My boy has carried ours since. Unfortunately he has not had a shot at a critter since. Hopefully this year.

Good luck, and thanks for getting another young hunter started.

I was already set up for loading the 44 and figured I could make low recoil hunting rounds for it. I'll have to find some 200gn bullets for it to try, the 240's shoot better than the 180's do but I was hoping to use the heavier bullet for hunting. Mabye the 200 will make a good compromise.

Rem / UMC both have a 180 grain load at 1600 fps.  mild recoil.  the rem load is a JHP load and the UMC load is a JSP.
The UMC load is about 2/3 the $.
Both are more than enough for a deer.
I will go look and see if I have some on the shelf if you want 5 or so to try.
good luck to your son on his hunt.
