MI Handgun Registration
« on: November 20, 2009, 04:53:11 AM »
A friend of mine told me he had a .45 Cal Kentucky pistol to sell.  It had been given to him and never registered.  I told him if he wanted to sell it he'd better register it.  Off he went to the Sherriffs in St. Ignace.  They checked with Lansing and told him it wasn't a firearm and didn't need to be registered.  That's very interesting.  My wife and I have had nine or ten BP handguns, and all were registered in MI  I suppose it's true.  I called the Sherriff and was told the same thing.  It's a nice step in the right direction.

That's news to me.  Any idea when they changed this?

I know in the past blackpowder handguns were treated just like centerfire/rimfire as far as purchase permit/registration was concerned.

I wonder if the law has actually been changed or if it's just a new "interpretation" by some judge or AG?

I have heard they changed the law on that but I can't seem to find the reference right now.  One of the boards where RKBA is the main topic (thehighroad.us, maybe) would probably be able to answer the question....

Another question......since all of ours are registered, what do you do now coach.  Can I just pack em up, put em in a box and mail them to someone??

technicaly in michigan your guns arent registered. What your bring it in for is a safety inspection. I know its a joke but thats the way it is. A black powder gun doesnt need to be registered/inspected. You can buy them right out of cabelas or anyother mail order internet dealer and recieve them directly to your house. I got into an argument (hes a good freind) with the local sheriff one day about this. He tried telling me because my ruger old armys were serial numbered they had to be registered. I told him he was wrong and he called the local batf agent and was told that any gun shooting black powder that didnt use a case was considered a non gun.

I bought my repro from Cabelas 2 years ago.....and the sheriff's office told me they don't register black powder.

Also....there is no longer a safety inspection......so you just get you permit and turn in the paperwork.

And for regular handguns.....since they have your name attached to a serial number on a gun.......I'd say they were registered.
