Fearless lure suggestions please
« on: October 10, 2003, 06:20:19 AM »
Who can reccomend a beginners lure, urine package for nortwestern Nebraska.  My targets are Coyotes and upland coons. I'm starting from scratch and I've got zero experience.  Obsessive research and reading have provided me with a place to start on every other aspect, but there are 8 million freakin lures, baits and urines to choose from.  I should start a poll to see which co. is recommended the most.

If any one in the trapping industry is looking for marketing Info. from their customers, here is a jewel. Put together a some starter packages for beginners.  Not every beginner has the psychogical makeup to do alot of reading and research, and could give up before they even get started.  I have been an avid outdoorsman for 36 yrs, but I never tried trapping until this year because I didn't know any trappers and the process seemed too convoluted and complicated. How many more folks could we bring into the fold if we helped them get over the equipment, and process hump, and into the field. You know that once they get into the field they'll be hooked for life.  We got to grow it if we're going to maintain it.

looking forward to your unabashed lure  choices

Trying out and experimenting with lures is a lot of fun, and educational as well. I can understand not wanting to start off with bad stuff, but I can almost assure you that a pole would result in as many opinions as there are available lures.

As far as a lure that seemed to take my inefficiencies as a canine trapper away more than any other, I still reach for a bottle of lenon's over any of the others I've experimented with. The #1 and #2 of both fox and coyote are great lures and truly produce in my area. Lenon's has been around for a long time, and there's obviously good reason for that. He will gladly hook you up with some good urine as well. To boot, you can most likely get a "tips and techniques" pamphlet out of Asa as well.

Here's a link for you:

Mallard is flying in the right direction.  I too would use Lenon's lures over others if I were targeting 'yotes.

Mallard is right in his reply, and I also agree with his recommended lure.
Lure and bait will not determine your success or failure, but they can be a contributing factor in both your success and failure.  Location is the key to success followed by the type of set you use and the care you put into making that set.  A quality lure such as Lenon's will aid in having that canine spend more time at your location if used properly.  BUT if you get some of the lure on the trap or dirt bedding the trap, you may get digging and good-bye yote.  Using an excessive amount of lure can be deterent for any canine to come close to your trap .  I certainly do not know everything, but I have made alot of mistakes that I remember.

Well, as of last year I too have Lenon's lure in my bag and I plan on keeping them there.  I should mention that old Boggy (his banner is a top the index page of this forum) carries Asa's lures.

I will also highly recomend John Grahams Fur Country lures.  I rely heavily on his Wiley Coyote lure when I want a strong gland lure and both his Mild and Super bonaza lures for dirt holes.  The super bonaza is a sorta sweet skunk which I use limitedly on my lines but it works.  I also use either his Deception or Seduction gland lures late season for fussy ones.  These last two lures are almost pure gland pastes.  John also makes a sorta sweet smelling lure, Predator Call that I use for cats and coyotes it is a nice change up as is his Blaster.

I am not experienced with yote lures.
I have used quite a few coon lures.
The ones that I have used that worked out good are
Hawbakers
Hardcore
Green Death bear lure
fish oil
There are more, but I can't recall the names.
Many lures will work for you.
Just because they work really good for me, or someone else, does not promise that they will work great for you.
Get a few, and try them. You will have to decide what you feel is best for you.

Stefs coyotes lures are as good as any around- and a darn sight better than most. Cachottier is as good an all around predator lure as I have seen and XLDC is right behind it. A lot of NE boys used these lures last year and resupplied with it this year.

Thank you for the earnest reponses.  And, I encourage folks to keep going, I would like to hear even more experienced opinions. I may be able to quit waffeling and just make a decision.  I guess I've paid higher tuition fees for some of lifes lessons that weren't nearly as fun.

Thanks again guys.
your time is appreciated.

See? I knew I forgot something, I forgot about Stef Forget's lures.
I did ok with them last year, but didn't give them a fair trial. So the amount that I actually did use them, I did pretty good.

Just wanted to add here, if you want a more "generic" approach to your question, I trap in Southeastern Nebraska myself. I catch a lot of coyotes and dryland coons at the same sets. The habitats overlap in this region greatly. The edge of any field, fencerow, weedy draw, etc. will often be traveled by just about any species, but especially coons and coyotes alike.
I went to making my dirt sets account for either. Gang setting is important, and I set 3 sets at good locations. I mix up my sets, too. One will be a dirthole or double dirthole set (two holes, one dirt pattern and trap), other two will be post sets and flat sets or a blind set.
I use #2 longsprings at all my dryland sets now, too. This trap will hold coyotes nicely but is not nearly as large and damaging to coons as #3s or the bigger coyote-sized coils on the market. A good, beefed up 1.75 coil is also a nice compromise for either species on land sets.
If I am specifically targeting coons with a set, then it will be a "coon" dirthole and not a coyote dirthole. (large hole, large dirt pattern, lots of fishy bait, etc.) but if I suspect either may visit the set, then I make it for coyotes and it works for either species.
As for lure/bait, I use a lot of fish. The coyotes here seem to like it a lot, but of course the coons do too. I use a lot of red fox gland lure and bobcat gland lure, too. It works very well on either species. So does beaver castor or mink gland lure, too. I get few coons on coyote urine or coyote gland lure. The red fox urine or red fox gland lure is by far the top producer for me on both species at these gang-setted multiple species locations. I do get doubles on coons, and once and awhile doubles on coyotes, too. Only had a couple of coon/coyote combo doubles. But more often than not I get one species, then the other within a day or two at most on the remakes. Haven't seen any pattern there yet, and one doesn't seem to show any fear of the other at remade sets either. I lure all of my remakes heavily with bobcat or mink gland lure for my changeup lure. It works every time for me.

I've been trying some fishmelon oil in test holes. Fishmelon oil = halfdone batch of fishoil with a watermelon and a couple of cantaloupes stirred in.

according to the tracks, every furbearer that walks by seems to be interested in it.  including coyote, coon, badger, possum, and skunks. Some of the tracks like the yote's just seem to get close enough to apparently see in the hole and/or get a good sniff. And one of the smaller ones has got in the hole and stole the wad of dead grass that the fishmelon was smeared on.
none the less its all very exciting, and I can't wait for season to start. I'm worse than an 8yr old on christmas eve.

shb:  Your results do not surprise me.  Fish oil is sort of a universal attractant , like beaver castor, that gets animal's attention even in a desert where the animal has never smelled it.  I once read a university study that concluded that animals were generally starved for sugar in their diets, so the addition of the watermelon would add to the appeal of the fish oil.  Ace :-)

shb:
Mr. Noonan has a real nice article on his system for dryland coon baiting/luring methods in this month's Trapper/Predator Caller mag. He has been touting this method for years. I basically use a modified version of this same method only I tailored it to take coyotes, coons, or fox at all my dryland sets. I generally only have couple of weeks to run sets at most, so I try to maximize my set potentials with this method. Gang set hot locations (fencerows, weedy draws in fields, grazed pastures with ponds, stream locations, etc.) with minimum 3 sets. One is alwasy double or single dirthole with fish and gland lure, other two are combination of post sets with red fox urine or gland lure, and a flat set with different bait and gland lure combo. I use bobcat gland lure, red fox gland lure, and mink gland lure. Beaver castor is change-up lure as is different fox gland lure brands. I rarely use coyote pee or gland lure since doesn't seem to take coons for me as readily as the others do.
Again, I use a trap that is easy on coons but still takes coyotes. Fox will fit nicely in same trap. Catch a lot of coons at post sets, so the urine or gland lure alone is plenty attractant...but eye appeal is key too. fire-blackened stick for a post stands out well, as does bleached white bones or single clump of weeds or end of fence post or log. Ground mice is another good bait for either species. I use a lot of Caven's Minnesota Special and Minnesota Valley predator bait. Coons love it too, but is killer on canines around here as well as cats.
