Latest "Basiliscoe Mercury" magazine-cannons etc.
« on: October 30, 2009, 05:10:22 AM »
Our distinguished member Bob Smith sent a link to this very interesting online magazine:

I noted, obviously with great delight, that our new Spanish cannon research group "SARA" was mentioned in it.

There's a great photo on pp. 24 of this part of the stuff the link above goes to.  It isn't a separately linked photo so you have to go here then to pp. 24:

This issue has a good article on materials used on iron cannons for rust prevention from the 1600's on through the 1800's,
it gives formulas which today's hazmat teams would scream bloody murder about...... example:

"In 1678 the Ordnance arranged
for the new turned guns to be coated
with a lacquer made from 30 gallons
of linseed oil and 168 pounds of
ground black lead (WO 51/20. 119v)."
Mr president I do not cling to either my gun or my Bible.... my gun is holstered on my side so I may carry my Bible and quote from it!

Sed tamen sal petrae LURO VOPO CAN UTRIET sulphuris; et sic facies tonituum et coruscationem si scias artficium

I use quite a bit of black lead, I mix it with shot for reloading. I don't believe a hazmat team would give a rats about "Graphite", which is what Black lead is. :)
