Looks like we may not have to hunt the coyotes this year. Daughter hit one with a slug Saturday, he spun in circles then ran off in a corn field. Couldnt find him. Neighbor boy called lastnight, he got one yesterday morning. So maybe we can take them out while deer hunting ;)

Saloon Slug, There you are. Thought you went west. Pretty good job painting.
I haven't seen any yet. Was wondering when there fur kicks in. It's been warm for this time of year but we have had a couple good frosts. I found a small piece of meat and bone yesterday. Looked down and there it was, about the size of a quarter. Would rather hunt them in snow. You probably never done that.
Plan to try to call coon in to a fight this year. Heard it works but they may climb in your lap. Might get nasty. ;D

No never hunted them in the sort of snow y'all get here (yes that is snow in the back ground in the mountains of San Diego)I imagine it makes them much easier to spot. This is what I am used to hunting them in.

The couple dogs I have seen out in fields the past month or so had very good coats. Looking forward popping a few I already know some one that will tan the furs for me.

Well now I know how Lonny felt the other day when he didn't connect on that deer.  >:( :(

I shot at a coyote this morning in the field next to my house.  I had just walked to the old barn where I wanted to setup and start calling. I had to have covered 400 yds of open field that just last week the beans were picked from when I sat down and saw this yote walking quickly 300yds in front of me. I pulled the legs out on my bipod and laid the Weatherby down in line with the yote. The scope was on 3.5x, so I turned it up and that's when he really saw me for sure.  He started to gallop straight away from me. I fired in front of him quickly after barking at him to stop a few times. He wasn't stopping for nothing, especially after I fired. His mate wasn't 30 seconds behind him running just as fast as he was after I fired.
Now I done edumacated two yotes.  ::) :P There's always next year I guess.

Look out Lonny! I'm headed that way tonight.  I hope you left me some deer to shoot at. ;)

Dinny, don't give up. Those yotes may give you another chance. Let them alone a while and try to call them in when you are set and ready for them.
Try a different gun, not sure those Weatherbys shoot that far. ;D
Don't believe Lonny, he has a freezer full. He just wants a hat. ;D

Thanks, but I'm pretty sure that Weatherby SPM .243 will shoot that far. ;)  I tested it by shooting leftover pumpkins from the farmers field next door. I had to put a little "english" on the bullets, but I could hit them at 350yds every shot.  I'll call back to those yotes in a few weeks after they have forgotten about me. ;D

Alright gents,
Now that deer season is nearly behind us, I want to hear about those coyotes tales.  I am bound and determined to get one this year. ;)

Let's see if the Primos Powerdogg will cal 'em in for me.

Good luck hunting and Happy Holidays!!

Thanks, Dinny

 ;)

The boy and I have tried a couple times now to call coyotes with an electric caller and used a Frozen rooster for a decoy(propped up in a field) I friend gave it to me. Rooster was a problem for a farmer. Farmer asked this feller to eliminate him. He did, then gave it to me(I say this because some one will ask why I have a frozen rooster) ;D

My question is should I give the rooster back and ask for another, because this one is obviously defective :D

That really depends on who exactly you are asking.  Personally I think there's nothing wrong with the rooster besides him being a little cold.  Perhaps if you threw him in your microwave before you went hunting he wouldn't be so stiff out there in the field.  ;) ;D ::)

  Speaking of coyotes

Was digging this morning. Found a very good site for coyote hunting help.
http://www.coyotecanada.ca/

He also put up a drawing (printable) for a life size Yote target pattern.
http://www.coyotecanada.ca/coyote_template.pdf

Very good read.
Oh yeah he used a Handi

Hey Dinny, I've been away from the forum for a couple months - life is too busy! I've hunted coyotes for years here in Southern Indiana. My favorite and most productive hunts is to slip into an area before first light in full camo and at first light, begin blowing one of my mouth calls for about 30 seconds with a 3 minute rest in between. I usually stay in one spot for no longer than 45 minutes then I move. My best day was when I called in five coyotes at the same time (I think they were already packed up at the time). Unfortunately, I only got one as I hunt mostly with a bolt action or single shot and usually in wooded areas.

I hunt with the following rifles:
-Remington model seven in 22-250 using 55 gr hornady v max or sierra 52 gr hp match pushed by H4064
-Ruger 77/22 stainless HB in 22 K hornet using Hornady 35 or 40 gr V max pushed by Hodgen Lil-Gun
-T/C contender with SS Bullberry 22 K Hornet 20" with same load as Ruger above
    -AR15 20 SS HB match .223 with Williams set trigger Hornady 55 gr V max & H322
-Remington 788 in .223 same as AR loads
-Remington model 7 in .308 with SS match barrel using 110 gr  hornady V Max
Scopes range from 3-9 Leupold to 6.5X 20 leupold with 4.5x14x40 being my favorite. Binoculars also come in handy (8x32 Pentax)

When pelt hunting, the 22-250 Remington model 7 is my favorite. Good shooting!

Tatonka.
I understand what you mean by having a busy life. I am now a parent and realize how much time I have left at the end of a day. It's not much compared to the BD (before Dad) days. I wouldn't trade it for anything though. :)

Thanks for your coyote hunting input.  I will give those tactics a try the next time I get out in the woods.

Nice hunting pieces too. ;)

Thanks, Dinny

One more reason why I should be hunting with an AR   :'(
