Using .308 brass for 7-08
« on: November 04, 2009, 12:40:01 PM »
Since 7-08 brass seems so expensive right now, I was just wondering how many of you have necked down 308 cases to use.  How sucessful has it worked for you and are there any problems to watch for?  I'd appreciate any feedback.  I can find once fired (not military) .308 brass for 10 cents apiece.  44 Man

44 Man,
I haven't necked down .308 brass, but I do neck up .243 brass. I have a .260 Rem. and a lot of .243 brass. Not wanting to spend the extra bucks for more brass I'm necking them up to .264 and it's working out fine for me. Just check the cartridge overall length to make sure it meets the minimum length for the 7mm-08 and if it's over trim as needed. Another concern may be thinning of the case neck so you may need to check that also. The necked up .243s are working great for me for the .260.

Neck up and necks aren't a problem so much, neck down and the necks may need to be turned, just depends on the chamber. I have to turn the necks when I neck 375Win down to 30-30AI or there just isn't much room after a bullet is seated in the case, but 375Win brass is a lot thicker to begin with, wouldn't likely be the same working with 308 to 7mm.

When I was shooting silhouette about all I used was 308 brass in my 7-08. Worked great unless you have a very tight necked chamber. I personally like a tight necked chamber, and by using the thicker necked down 308 brass it helped make a tighter neck on a factory chamber. Shot untold rounds through factory barrels that way, always had better accuracy than with factory 7-08 brass. JMHO, Billy

Necking down you have to be careful the the neck doesn't get to thick. And this is very likely with mil sup brass. I tends to be thicker to start with. If you invest in a neck turning tool for the 7m-08 then and make sure you trim to the correct length then you will be fine. You sure don't want to get a gas check because of to tight a neck the results would not be pleasant.

Get a neck turning tool such as a Forrester or Sinclair. I make all my CHeetah brass from 243 cases. I have found that if you inside neck ream a 243 case before your neck it to 224 there is less effort and case loss.If you are trying to save money it you will have to make a lot of cases  to offset the purchase of the turning tools. I use them for better accuracy and case life.

I've necked 308 up to 358 and down to 243. Check for thickness at the neck, ream if necessary, and you probably might want to anneal the neck to relieve the stress.
