I done shot me a nice'n
« on: October 10, 2003, 04:13:02 PM »
Here is my story:
I haden't even planned on going out tonight so i could get some sleep for tomorrow. BUT, my uncle called me and said there has been a big doe walking around and eating the tops off of his chrismas trees and crushing them from laying on them. So i said I only have an hour left but i'd be over to see what i could see. I didn't see any deer while there but on the walk home i nailed a big doe. I was just about to walk past my pavilion in the back yard and i heard branches and leaves snapping and breaking so i turned around. Low and behold it's a darn deer walking within 20 yards of me. It just so happens i have a target that i practice on RIGHT NEXT TO HER!!!! I knew exactly how far she was. Anyway, It was a little too dark to tell if it was a doe or a buck when she had her head down. I drew back and I gave a little call so she could pick her head up. There was a field in the background with plenty of light to reflect off of her head. As soon as I saw that she was a skinhead i let that Carbon Excell with the Spitfire attached fly free. THWAP.......nailed her!!!!!! She ran a lot further than i expected her too though. As soon as she was out of the general area i went and checked for some blood. It was nice and thick and dark red. I knew i put a good hit on her then. Waited about 15 minutes and went trailing her. I almost stepped on her and she jumped to her feet and started barreling down towards the road.
I let her go another half hour and my uncle came over. We trailed her down below the road and spotted her about 30 yards on the edge of some laurels....STILL ALIVE!!!! She was panting really bad but not moving. So we let her go and got her an hour later when she finally died. She ran probobly a good 200 yards....laid down about 5 times.
She bled really good though. Well, thats my story.
BTW, Watch for those dang ticks guys/gals. This doe was LOADED with them!!!!
And also, it went in on the edge of her shoulder and came out about 5 inches back on the other side. When cleaning i found i destroyed the top of the heart and there was a hole right through the liver. I couldn't find the lungs but i would assume i punctured at least one since she panting so hard.

Did the broadhead open?  From what you 1st described I would have said it was strictly a liver hit.  Sometimes with this hit they go right down and other times they can go for quite a while. It would have also been in line with the darker blood. But the main thing is that you kept on her and did a good recovery.  Congrats!

I just had a double lung hit with a heart nick, Longwinters. The buck went about 150yds from where he was shot. There was no light foamy blood and no blood in his nose or mouth. I don't use mechanicals so mine blades are always open.

I've had single lung hits that had the text book spray out both sides and from the mouth. I guess someone forgot to tell these deer to read the text book so they'd know how to bleed and die from different shots :)

Good job, 01magnatec. The ticks were bad on mine from Illinois too. I found a bunch on him and 3 on me when I was done skinning.

Longwinters, Yes the blades did open.  I love the spitfires. They haven't done me wrong yet.
I knew i hit something vital when i first shot because of how she jumped in the air.  It was the classic jump you always see from a fatal hit.
Then when i first trailed her i saw her with blood all over her shoulder and heart area. It just happened to go in and Just barely miss the shoulder blade. It clipped everything inside.
The heart was in pieces when i pulled it out. Liver had a perfect 3 blade hole in it. And i couldn't find the lungs.
It was a little dark and i didn't want to meet the Mr.Bear that was hanging around my house. ;)
Anyway, thanks guys.
