.500 S&W
« on: August 26, 2009, 03:11:17 PM »
Just ordered .500 S&W from MGM: 26" heavy SS matte, throated for 350 XTP max bullet with intent to go with 300 FTX as primary and 350 XTP secondary. Plan to use it in IN shotgun zones where rifles are legal with max case length of 1.625 and hopefully in MI if the proposed similar rule gets out of committee and gets to vote this year. Should get it in about 3 weeks and post up hopefully some good results. Expect it should be about a 12 Ga slug on steroids for sure with better and more consistent accuracy.  Anyone else been down this road?

I've got an 16" OTT 500 S&W barrel that I used for deer hunting.  The first one I had did not have a muzzle brake and I would occasionally get hit with the scope.  My current barrel has a brake and is actually comfortable to shoot.  I really like the barnes 325 gr bullets, but I haven't been able to get my current barrel to shoot them right. I'm using the 300 gr ftx bullets for now.

I have a 500 S&W Mag. Encore handgun.  After trying a number of bullets and powders, I settled on H110/Win. 296 Nd Sierra 400 gr. SportsMaster bullets which give me 1 to 1.5 inch 100 yard groups.

Finally got the SS barrel from MGM in .500 S&W Mag in Encore, 26" Pro-Hunter barrel contour without fluted, throated for Hornady 300 gr. FTX. So far, couldn't be happier. Groups inside 1" ALL day at 100 yards. Powder is Lil Gun at 45.0 gr through chronograph is 2390 average with 19 SD so pretty good on consistency. Recoil is OK with Pro-Hunter stock. I will be hunting with it this year in Indiana unless I arrow buck sooner. Barrel from MGM is perfect fit an finish, doesn't foul at all. No copper buildup after 100 rounds so far.

I'm using the exact same load.  45 gr Lilgun and the 300 Gr FTX.  2390 is great velocity.  Any guess on what these should shoot out of my 16" barrel?
