Note: Service record shows that Joseph John Johnston enlisted in Company K, 1st Georgia Reserve, on April 27, 1864 in Atlanta; was captured near Chattahoochee July 13, 1864, was sent to Camp Douglas, IL where he died November 3, 1864. The service record also shows him to have ben 5' 10" with fair complexion, light hair and blue eyes.
Elizabeth Velvin Johnston made affidavit on April 18, 1891 that "while at hom on sick furlough, in July 1864, he was caputred by Stoneman's raid and carried to prison at Camp Douglas, IL and died, a prisoner of war, in said prison in October 1864." The file also includes an affidavit by B P Newell that "he was in prison at Camp Douglas, IL, in October 1864 and saw J J Johnston die and assisted in puttin him in his coffin." Various documents in the record gives the date of his death as October 26, 1864, but the service record gives the date as November 3, 1864.
