Looking for clothes
« on: October 16, 2003, 03:08:32 AM »
I'm looking to buy some clothing.  Not necessisarily buckskin, but something from the mountainman period.  Cotton cloth would be fine.  Does anyone know where I may get some used or low priced stuff.

You might consider making your own shirts, they're easy.  You might also do your shopping at rondezvous.  There are usually enough traders to go around.  It sounds like you have done your homework so far by going with cloth rather than leather.  You might also consider developing a persona and outfit accordingly, before spending $ uselessly.  Good luck and drop a line if you need help.
Thanks!
Bob

If you decide to make your own clothing, you can buy patterns for about $8.00. If memory serves me correctly, Mountain State Muzzleloading sells patterns for shirts and pants, as well as dresses for women reenactors.

If you just wish to buy your clothing, there is Dixie, Mountain State Muzzleloading, and probably a few others if you check a search engine on the net.

Another source is to check out the local or not so local Mountain Man Clubs - (on the net) - (or at the local leather store) - to see who the members have used for their clothing.

I found that the hardest piece of clothing to find was the proper foot wear.  I finally made my mocs. Not a hard job.

Try Jas Townsend and Sons or it may be James Townsend and Sons.  They will sell you patterns, or Taylor-made.

Also Northwest Traders, something like that.  Best place to get quality wool blankets and blanket coats.  Whitney blankets are every bit as good as true Hudson Bay blankets, and every bit as authentic.  But much cheaper.

If you want used, and cheap - go to Goodwill    Seriously.  Look through the racks of men's wool dress pants.  For a few bucks you'll find something.  A light wool dress pant is the ultimate summer camping pants.  They breath, and they won't get filthy as you cook over a campfire.

Then go to the women's section an look for a flax, cotton, or linen blouse with long sleeves.  You can usually find a blouse with gathers at the cuffs and shoulders.

Then be creative with modifications.  You can cut those wool pants off around the knees and cinch 'em up with buttons - wear long knee-high socks and you've got knickers.

Change a few buttons on the blouse to pewter or antlers and you're set.

Let the blouse cover the waist of your pants.

'nuther good trick is to get some white painter pants and cut off the tool loop.
