Now I remember why I don't like the 22-250
« on: November 06, 2009, 02:16:24 PM »
Trimming the brass . New brass, loaded HOT, stretch a lot. The 22-250 case design has a lot of taper and it loves to flow under pressure. So it's off to trim some brass. Any one have a 22-250 AI reamer? ??? 26-t

 >:(26, do you neck size????? I guess I don't load my brass to the top, but trimming has not be excessive, and I seem to get more speed out of my loads than indicated by the books..... The AI is a nice case, have one of those also, but again trimming has not been excessive....

They work!

Some of this was (once fired) in a bolt gun that I had years ago,and some fired in the Handy. So not knowing what chamber it was fired in I full length sized the all brass and measured it and of the 60 cases, 50 needed to be trim-ed. This is the first reloading for this brass. It measured 1.923-.925 long ,it is Remington brass all from the same lot#. I will neck size only the next time I load this brass. ;D    26-t

The 22-250 is hard on brass and stretches a lot. Eventual cases will seperate. Neck sizing will not stop the stretching. Inspect your cases for tell tale seperation and discard them. I shot a 22-250 in a 98 bolt action and caselife in that rifle was not great and a Handi wont be any different.

Yes a 22-250 AI would be much better and would solve the trimming and stretching. This rifle was not made to shoot reduced loads what would be the point.

A tight fitting bronze brush will remove a seperated case.

That is why I sold the bolt gun. It ate brass for lunch. I hope this Handi will be a little better. The bolt was a Sako and it had a highly polished chamber, and the throat was eroded some(shot-out). My Handi's chamber isn't nearly as polished, I hope it will grip the brass better and reduce the forward flow of the brass.   26-t

Trim once and then use the X-Die.
Another thing is I use a RCBS trimmer with a 3way trim head. This is a real time saver

I shoot several thousand 22-250 and a thousand 220Swift round each year and use an x-die for both.

;) My experience with the .22-250 has been quite different from some of yours. Had my first one when it was just introduced. Now I have 2 and must have owned half a dozen Rem. heavy barrels. My old ADL is on its 3rd barrel, but shooting thousands of rounds at p.dogs and coyotes is hard on barrels. Plus for many years that old .22-250 was the only varmit rifle I had, so it got used almost everyday. But once I had my brass trimmed, I neck sized, and really had no serious problems with undue case stretching. Most of the cases would finally develop a crack in the neck from too many trips though the die. A few Norma did seperate, but never had that problem to any degree with the American brass.  I did not load to the hilt, but the loads were fairly hot... Now, since I have other varmit rounds, I don't hit on the .22-250 as much, but this morning I got my old one out, to get ready for a trip south. Ran a patch through the barrel and drilled three into about 1/2". Not bad from a cold clean barrel...So the Az. coyotes had better beware.

Ohio has plenty of soybean eating woodchucks that farmers hate and will beg you to shoot them.
I shoot at paper every Saturday or Sunday morning during the summer (wife goes to the inlaws for 10-12 spring and summer weeks every year!)
This was the first year I shot at PD's  and am hooked... back to CO or WY next year for more

I shoot the 22-250 in a Remmy 700 that has been 'blue-printed' tight and happens to have a pretty tight neck (still within Sami). I only neck resize and have never had case stretch after initial 'shake-down' ( shot 3-4 times). My cases have been shot MANY times thereafter with no stretch at all. The flexible actions like the Handi (et.al.) will be an entirely different matter. It is one round that is better left to bolt guns JMHO.
