Looking for a way to cook that chicken you just borrowed, and ain't got a pan? Got this from an old boy who learned it in the hobo jungles.   Chop off its head and feet and plaster it in mud. Good heavy layer. Then put it in the fire and let it bake. I've only tried it on chicken, 'cause that's what I had running around, so if it's a smaller bird, shouldn't take as long. Took Mrs. Hen a couple hours and then some. To eat, break off the shell and the skin and feathers all come off with it. Separate the back from the breast and the rest falls out in a clump. S'pose you could leave the feet and head on if you didn't have anything to chop with.

It's a whole lot better than it sounds, but never let anyone talk you into eating a fox.

I guess if you are hungry enough you will eat anything.

A cople years ago my brothers and I were fishing on a large lake when our motor took a crap.  While waiting on a small island for a ride back to camp we built a fire and caught a few fish.

I took a few of the fish we caught and just laid them on the fire without cleaning or gutting.  A few minutes later the fish were cooked.  Just peel off the skin and the meat can just be pulled of and eaten.  Very tasty and very fresh.

Think I'll gut the chicken first and look for a piece of wire or a stick to pin or wrap him back together. The method does work though and I would not have to be all that hungry. My grandfather and others (we're Cherokee) used to throw turtles in the coals while still alive. Said for a few seconds they moved faster than ever in their entire life but, settled down after that. Then just pull the bottom off and eat out of the ready-made bowl.
You may all go to hell, I will go to Texas. Davy Crockett
