Steelmaster final crimp problems
« on: November 04, 2003, 08:01:21 PM »
I am having trouble with a new steelmaster and the final crimp.  I must be finding some of the "touchy" parts of setting up.  The final crimp looks like a dome on top of where the previous crimpline is.  I have tried many adjustments of the cam and punch to no avail.  It also does not make any difference if I try 3 1/2", 3", or 2 3/4" (with the right conversion kits) they all look the same. I believe I am missing some small adjustment, just don't know where.

Lots of things to look at and adjust.  My first inclination was the punch adjustment, but you say you've adjusted that.  You may need to adjust some more, almost to the point of the hull collapsing.  Lower the starter crimp to help ease the hull collapse problem.  Try adding to the wad seating pressure if the dome is from the crimp is opening up.  The problem could also be the stackup of components, so double check you load with your loading manual.

If all else fails, contact MEC for assistance.

Thanks for the help.  I tried several more adjustments on several different shell heights. I finally have gotten a good crimp after using a factory shell and adjusting to it.  I also had to adjust the center column height of the loader, why it wasn't factory adjusted to 31/2" shells I don't know.  Now all I have to fix is the deprime.  All sizes of shells won't deprime now.  I probably will have to move the column back to deprime and the change to reload?
Thanks for the forum and the help

There should be  spacers you can put between the deprime punch and the turret. My old Sizemaster isn't 3 1/2" capable, but the 3" spacer is part number 8126 and the spacers should be in your parts bag.
