Regular Dodge Ram with a gas engine: how do they stack up?
« on: November 25, 2009, 03:55:35 AM »
Hi folks,

I'm looking for some experiences here on the Dodge Ram.

I see so many on the road, but to be honest, I really haven't heard any great reviews on them.  Between the F-150, Silverado, and possibly a Tacoma (which is smaller, I know)...

- which would you pick?
- is the Ram under-rated?
- is the Ram a good buy when you figure in incentives vs an expensive Tacoma?

What do you think?

Thanks, and happy Thanksgiving.

I've never owned a "good" Chrylser product all have dissappointed me badly. Can you say JUNK? Now that the government bought them I sure won't be looking for another.

Why are you looking at and comparing the smaller Toyota to the full size American brands? Why not go for the Tundra which is as big as and more powerful than the American brand trucks?

My last two new trucks have been full size Toyota's.

Price, really.
I'm just wondering if the dodge is a good value.  All i've heard is stories like yours.
Used Tundra may be the way to go.
Thanks.

ive got two neigbors that have hemi rams and theyve both been excellent trucks. They have just as much power as my chev if not a bit more and almost as good gas milage. Im a chev man through and through but if i looked at any other brand it would be a dodge. They come along way from the crap they used to build. Got another neighbor with a tacoma. Its been reliable but its smaller and doesnt get as good of gas milage as either the dodge or the chev. It does have good power though. Id say quality control is about equal on all three. One thing to keep in mind if your buying it for the long haul is doing the same repair on a toyota is going to cost you half again as much as it will on the american trucks. Maybe 20 years ago i couldnt argue that a toyota would outlast a domestic truck but the new chevs fords and dodges will easily run over 200k miles anymore and i just dont see any advantage to the jap vehicles anymore. Another big point in buying new is its going to be alot easier to deal on a domestic truck as they got all kinds of  incenitives right now and your going to get a much better deal then a toyota.

I have a Dodge with a 318 cubic inch enging in it.  If you are okay with buying a truck manufactured by socialists, go ahead and get a Dodge, but steer clear of the smaller engine options.  Totally gutless.

I also have a Ford F250 Super Duty with a PowerStroke diesel.  It runs circles around the Dodge.  So far, that is my favorite car/truck of my entire lifetime, and I'm a geezer.

Son-in-law has a five year old RAM.  It spends a lot of time in the shop.

I own 2 Dodge trucks and I love them. I drive a 2001 4x4 with a 318. It's my daily driver, off-road/adventure and work horse truck... and it can handle just about anything. My wife drives a 2006 2X4 with the MDS Hemi engine. It is our family vehicle and we love it. I need to think about putting some new shocks and rubber on it this year, and maybe a tune up... but it runs awesome... zero problems. And with that MDS engine, I've gotten up to 24 mpg highway carrying five passengers and a full payload... that is sweet. I have always been attracted to the look of the Ram... it just has that serious TRUCK look. Nothing space age about it.

Now, my profession is one that has provided me the ability to field test the "big 3" in an off-road capacity, 5 days a week, 10 hours a day for the past eleven years. I have driven them all, stock and with mods. I will leave mods aside because with today's technology you can make a Pinto go vertical. But in my professional opinion (one of the few times I can actually say this) for a stock truck 4X4 in constant and consistant off-road use and abuse they rank 1) Chevy 2) Dodge 3) Ford. I use performance and lifespan as the primary contributing factors in setting this personal rank. Chevy easily outperforms the others off the lot. The generic Ford F-150 4X4's literally fall apart  and aren't worth the frames they are placed on. I will say those newer Super Duty's look real good though!

I will conclude this by saying a 1998 Toyota Tacoma Pre Runner is one of the best vehicles I ever owned, and a 2005 Jeep Cherokee is the worst.

You will not be disappointed with the Ram.

I have an '07 dodge ram with a hemi, towing package, 4wd. It's a great truck and the one I had last with the 318 like the above poster was a dog. I get better gas mileage with the hemi which is a 350 with 365 hp than I did with the smaller v-8. The hemi shuts off half the engine on the highway once you get up to cruising speed. I really like this truck but I hate the 6 foot bed and won't ever buy another on without a full size bed.

I still just can't make myself buy a Japanese vehicle.

I am thinking of trying a superduty though nextime.

My personal pickup is a 05 Dodge cummins powered... great truck.
When I was told at work to go get a pickup I first went to the Ford dealer, I have been a Ford guy all my life. I had one all but bought when the Dodge dealer called me, a couple of minor options on his truck that the Ford did not have, no biggie there but Ford was $3000 more for an equal truck. All the Ford dealer would say to justify the difference was "it's a Dodge".
I have worked my work Hemi powered Ram 2500 reasonably hard for a few years and have had no, nada, nothing, not any problems.
The Hemi does like to drink gas but no worse than my friends say about their Fords or the sales reps I work with that are driving GMC's.
I am a firm believer that the Dodge is a quality pickup and the Hemi is equally good.

Ever hear of a Hemi blowing a spark plug... no... how about a Ford?!

I own a 2004 hemi 4x4 and it's been the most problem free vehicle I've ever owned. Dodge makes just as good of truck as any of them.  I've towed almost 8000lbs with my 1/2 ton and never did it feel underpowered even on hills.  I could go just as fast as I wanted.  The only reason Toyota has more  in towing tests is because they come standard wih a 4.30 rear end.  If others did that it would even things up.   The new Hemi has just as much power if not more than the Toyota now.

Just buy a Consumers Reports tests book and study it.

They (in my opinion) provide the best information on vehicles.  They accept no advertising so they have no dog in the fight and no brand loyalty.

The problem with advice from someone who has always owned a certain brand (take your pick) is they have nothing to compare it with and think any problems they have with it are normal for all vehicles and so think of it as "routine maintenance".

Not knocking the vehicles, but just as a matter of principle I wouldn't buy any product made by the two government run makers.

have a 93 2500 dodge 4x4, last year with solid axle. has 5.9 gas engine, 410 gears,4 speed o/d manual.a real serious work truck and that is how i use it. power steering pump seals only trouble. fuel economy about as expected. 8.5-10.0 with goose neck 14.0-14.5 empty, which is seldom.have had it since 95 and not worth anything as a trade but will do anything a new $36,000.00 truck will do and not worry about a ding.would have bought a tundra in 04 that had a 2,500.00 rebate and dealer wanted 25,096.00. i offered even 25,000.00 they refused.,so got a 1500 sierra that listed for 5,000.00 more than the tundra for 23,500.00 after rebates.it has been a dependable truck no trouble whatsoever at 50,000 miles, other half has 05 avalanche also new with 139,000 miles. it has needed water pump, front ujoint, tuneup all at 100,000.has also had to have two tailgate latches and sparetire lock cut off due to rusting.all in all i cannot complain about either the dodge or general motors. i will consider either gmc or tundra next trade, with best cash deal probably being the clincher. i flat do not like dodge styling at this time.

I like the Cummins no matter what truck it was in. I just wish my 98 Dodge had a "Allison" transmission to compliment the package :D. Mine has "Starcrafter" body and has held together well. I think the Chevy's ride better, the Ford's more rugged, and the Japanees tighter tolerances even though they are usually smaller overall. Any way, any "pick" you make is a "compromise".  I'll take my 500K engine and hope I can baby the "frame" to go along with the "program" ;D

Dodge has the stronger motor, they just don't put the low gears in them like Toyota does. The secret behind Toyota is nothing but gears.  There frames are not any stronger than any of the rest of them. In fact they might be a little weaker.  With the right gear, you can pull any weight.  Think of most small farm tractors only have 30-40hp.  They pull because they have the right gears.  The only way to get a Dodge geared like the Toyota is move to the power wagon which has 4.56 in the front and rear. Dodge has the better warranty and always has. I think their powertrain is lifetime now.  If i could get a Toyota for the price of a Dodge with the warranty, I would have probably bought one.  This was taken off the Toyota and Dodge website for 2009.

optional engine:
Dodge
5.7L OHV HEMI®
Horsepower @ rpm 390 @ 5,600
Toyota
V8 5.7L DOHC V8
381 @ 5,600
Torque (lb-ft)
Dodge
@ rpm 407 @ 3,950
Toyota
401 @ 3,600

Dodge is advertising their engine at 380 HP on TV not 390.

There is a Toyota dealership over in B'ham that is giving a life time warranty on all Toyota vehicles they sell that will be honored at all Toyota dealerships nationwide. Sure wish I'd have known that before I bought mine. Life time is defined as so long as the original owner still has the vehicle.

other than the warranty who cares about 10 horsepower or a few pounds of torque its not like you can feel it anyway all trucks are more or less the same now adays  just in different flavors everyone has their own opinion its usually because they have never owned one truck or the other to me comparing full size trucks now adays is almost like comparing colors," hey bud i heard the red ones are faster."    "no way its the blue ones are so much better." there are good and bad vehicles from every maunfacturer

Ill take all the hp and torque i can get. Thats the only thing i can nit pick about my chev. It has good hp but it could stand some more torque. Its a 5.3 and it kind of falls on its face when towing. the old 5.7s had less hp but seemed to have more torque. If i had to do it again id definaltely opt for the 6.0 or maybe even a desiel. At least a set of gears steaper then 343s!! I can get a bit over 20mpg on the highway but put even a small trailer with an atv on it and im down to 10!!! The low torque motor along with the crap gears just make the thing work to hard. I put a k&n full intake a borla exaust and had the computer reprogramed and that helped but it still is crap in the towing department.

I don't know what the commercials are sayting, but the Dodge website says 390 for the Hemi. Maybe a misprint, but I'm finding that info all over the net.  I think Dodge did two hp boost just to keep ahead of Toyota in the hp wars.  One was in 2007 and the other was in 2009.  I've never seen a lifetime warranty on any Toyota or Honda product.  I wish I would have seen this offered  when I bought my vehicles in 2004.  A toyota with a lifetime warranty would be awesome.  I have to hand it to Toyota; they know how to gear a truck.  I just wish the others would go to 4:30 rear ends and 6-speed transmissions.  I love Dodge, but if the price fell on a toyota to match the dodge then I would definitely buy toyota.  They were just not worth the $7-8000 more than the two Toyota dealerships around me wanted.  The waranty was also another issue.

Dunno if any other Toyota dealerships are offering that life time warranty or not. The local one isn't but if ya buy there in B'ham they say it will be honored at any Toyota dealership nationwide. I'd sure have gone to B'ham had it been offered when I got my Sequoia.

Strange thing is around here my comparison shopping showed the Toyota to be several thousands cheaper both times than Chevy, GMC, Ford or Dodge. Not that I'd have bought a Dodge really as all the Chrysler vehicles I've been associated with going back to a '56 dad owned were lemons. I gave up on them perhaps too soon but gave up nontheless. I do like Fords and have bought more of them new than anything else but the current crop has a bad case of the uglies to me. Still in the end price and reputation for quality backed up by my personal experience with three of them sold me on the Toyota.

It was the rebates that made the difference.  Toyota just doesn't have to offer them to increase sales like Dodge does.  It was a money issue for me.

I have an older Dodge. A '96 ram 1500 extended cab 2X4 with a 318. She's got mre than 270,000 miles and still runs strong. Original tranny too. I have driven the new Dodges and they are nice but I have no info on how they last or if there are problems.

I have a 2007 Dodge Ram Quad Cab SLT, 4x4 Hemi, auto, 3:92 gears w/ rear LSD, tow package, pretty much loaded.   I absolutely love this truck.   It's been great from the day I bought it.   It came with 20 inch wheels and tires.   I replaced them with 17 inch wheels and tires.   The 20's sucked in the snow and were even worse in the mud.   That's the only thing I didn't like about this truck.

I like the Tundra's too.   They seem like a well built truck.   I had problems with Ford products a while back and haven't bought their products in about 10 years.   They're doing the best of the Big Three right now so I take it they changed their ways.   I haven't owned GM products in a while either, other then the '78 Camaro I trailered home this past summer with my Ram!

I have a Dodge Dakota, no its not the full size Ram. But its the extra cab in the sport model, bought new in 2001. 6 cylinder. Its the only Chrysler I've ever owned. I have 170,000 miles on it and its going strong. Had to replace a heater fan that all. I've towed a camper, and trailer loaded with ATVs, and for 3years had an over the bed camper on it. I've extensively used it in 4WD. I have no complaints so far. Definitely got my moneys worth out of it.

lsd???

It means Limited Slip Differential.   It makes both rear wheels turn instead of the usual one wheel turning that most trucks, SUV's and rear wheel drive cars have.   It makes a huge difference in snow and mud.   You have to be careful with them though on loss ground as they can make the rear of the vehicle kick out to one side or another.

The other kind of LSD is out of my legal, lol I meant league.  ;D ;)
