3030 does the job
« on: November 07, 2009, 02:47:46 PM »
I used my 30-30 handi today for the first time hunting.
I used 153 gr pulled bul. from 762x39 wolf loads with a moderate load of 4198 powder.
I just put a vintage redfield 1 to 4 scope on it yesterday. It worked great.
I shot a toehead whitetail at about 60 yrds. It was not very big, but it will taste very good.
I have 4 more tags to fill so I will get a bigger one next time.

I just love the .30-30 and I could live with it as my only rifle.  Way to go!

I started hunting  in the 70s, I went thru the "gotta have that new bolt ultra rifle" phase. now, with the exception of a early mod. 70 .264 mag( for yotees) all I shoot or hunt with is a 30-30. Easy to shoot, easy to reload for, reload light and fast, heavey and slow, cast lead, jacketed, heck I even shoot quite a few round ball each year. Practice every chance you get, be confident of your shot placement, and join the rest of us that love this round.

Stan,
What's a toehead whitetail?  ???  I have never heard that term used before.  I've been thinking about a 30-30 Handi, guess I'm gonna have to put it on my wishlist. ;)  Got it!!!!! ;) :)

Dinny, I believe "towhead" refers to a youngster.

Keep yer head down and get home safely.

Around here people refer to a tow head or knot head buck the same, hasn't broken the skin.

In Australianese, if we were shooting "toe head" whitetails, they would be young "blonde" deer!

Tow is a blondish fiber from flax plants which is woven into linen.  Young children frequently have hair this color.  The word is frequently used to refer to youth.

I am also a fan of the 30-30, I have an older model 058 combo in 30-30/20 Gage.  The rifle barrel will shoot 1" groups with various loads.

I was a "tow head" (white blonde) for the first year or so of my life and now at 60+ I am turning back to a tow head. ::)

I like seeing the 30-30 stories here on the forums. I have three of the Toppers all in 30-30.
