New "WHITE" Barrel
« on: December 02, 2009, 05:34:25 AM »
:) I just  received a 260 REM barrel for my Stevens 200 in "white" & want to finish it myself.  I don't have access to an oven big enough to bake a 26" barrel, so I won't be doing that.

Can I get some suggestions on how to go with it - blue, something from Brownells, ? ? ?

Thanks in advance  :) :D ;D    Jim

:( No I don't nc, that method is to far over the top for this project @ this time.  Others I know have

agreed that it is an excellent method.  Thanks for the suggestion.  :) Jim

In that case, you can build an "oven" for baked on finishes.  Find a larger diameter metal pipe and some space heaters.

Use a brass cleaning rod to run through the barrel, then suspend you're barrel using other wires tied off at the ends of your "oven".

Two ceramic space heaters, one on each end, should get the heat up enough to do it OK.  Optionally, a bigger one aimed at the pipe will do also, and likely provide convection.

Let me know and I can draw a pic.  The one I used is long since been converted to something else.

Cold blue just doesn't work for me.

IIRC the instructions indicated a 300degree temp, and with the heaters I used, butted right up to the ends of the pipe, I think I achieved 220, but I let it go about 4 hourse (outside in a clear area of an outbuilding).  Just make sure you're safe, fire hazard wise.

I also used the same tube and set it on the gas grill once to do another barrel.   :D

That one I'm pretty sure got above 300.  I should have grilled a few burgers while it was going, though.
