6.5 Arasaka
« on: November 19, 2009, 10:42:16 AM »
I had posted this in gunsmithing but it seems this would be a good place for it too.

I have a 6.5 jap. Arasaka that I rebarreled in 260 Remington. It has a maple manlicher stock with a Tinmey side safy trigger and a 2-7 Leupold on top. The gun shoots well with very little recoil. The only thing I do not like is that it cocks on close.
I have been told that the Arasaka and the Mauser are very similar. What would it take to convert the Arasaka to cock on open?

I'm not so sure there is a conversion kit for the Arisaka but need to ask if there is a problem with closing the action that would make you think a conversion to cock on opening would help.....

Also, the SMLE action is a cock on closing and that is the fastest bolt action ever made, I believe.

The Arisaka action is rock solid and strong and I believe there are some Mauser similarities as there are in the Carcano.  Re-barrelling a Arisak to 260 is a cool idea.  How does she shoot????

If I take 5 shots there is no paper left it the center of the target at 100 yrds. It is birds eye maple and a Manlicher stock. The pistle grip is thin and the gun is light. All and all, it is a real pleasure to shoot and carry. The only thing I don't like is that it is a little hard to close because you are overcoming the tension of the firing pin spring. I have put a Wolf spring in it and shortened it as much as I can without causing miss fires.  If I can get it to cock on open, the gun would be perfict!

It also has a Tinmey side safety trigger.

Bingo - that sounds like a right nice set-up you have there and failing the availability of a conversion kit I would suggest you simply familiarize yourself with the working of the action.  My Swedish Mauser cocks on closing and although I prefer the cock on opening of the 98s I have no problems with the Swede or my SMLEs.

When I go to my hunting stand and it is still dark I do not chamber a round until I am set up properly in my location - and when chambering I find the cock on closing action to be very quiet.  HTH.
