Author Topic: Fox Ridge is offering the 375 JDJ (Read 875 times)

I just got my new Fox Ridge outfitters catalog. In it under Contender AND Encore barrels. they have the 375 JDJ?? I wonder if JD is loosening up a bit? now if LEE, RCBS, or Hornady starts offering the dies!!!

I assume TC won't be using Shilen blanks like SSK does, or offer a MB as effective as JD's either though. Would be interesting to know why JD is letting them use his moniker instead of the 375X444 all the other barrel makers are using. Maybe because so many shooters are going cheap now days and getting him to rechamber TC factory barrels to JDJ's instead of just buying the best? As for the dies, I doubt until a heck-of-a lot of barrels are sold that the die companies will be adding the 375JDJ to their standard lists. Besides, the price JD charges for die sets is quite reasonable anyway. Sorry, but if it ain't from SSK, its just not a JDJ (and rechambers don't count) to me. :wink: IMO-YMMV

This is not the first time J. D. has allowed TC to use a trademarked name. He did that before with the 300 Whisper. It is, as far as I know, the first time with a cartridge using the JDJ in the name though.

Unless I start shooting bench rest competions which I doubt, I would take the lower price if I wanted a 375JDJ. No doubt JD makes a better barrel with the Shilen blank, but it is just like my cars, I drive Chevys not a Lexus.

I'm with bullseye. Us folks in military don't make enough to buy barrels from JD. I wish I was able to order 25-06 JDJ from him but it just ain't gonna happen anytime soon.

Lets see here now. I had a 44 mag. Contender barrel that I sent to SSK for them to rechamber to a 444 Marlin. So I guess it really isn't a real SSK barrel? Accuary is excellent. I also wonder if that wild hog would of been any deader if a real SSK barrel would of been used on it.

I guess I bought my first JDJ barrel from SSK not because I needed a caliber for a specific cause but rather because I wanted an original from one of the top gunmen and contributers to the firearms profession. I think J.D. is in his own right, a legend to his profession and I'm proud to own an original firearm designed, tested, and manufactured by him. It just happens to be a 375JDJ.

You missed my point Turk. First off, I did say IMHO-YMMV... BTW. Was just my opinion as your comments are yours. But you're comparing apples to oranges. The 444 Marlin is not one of JD's proprietory cartridges - all the JDJ's are, and a JDJ was what the main topic of this thread was about. I'll admit that you had a great smith do your 444 rechamber though... not all rechambers are the same - the smith who does it matters a lot. But a TC factory barrel, even rechambered is not on par with an original custom barrel from certain custom makers using higher quality blanks, regardless of who rechambers the factory barrel (another IMO). Sure your rechambered factory barrel is very capable of harvesting game, so are most of the TC factory barrels as they come right out of the factory, even though we all know they can have serious quality control problems at TC. As billjoe touched on, buying a SSK in support (or in thanks) of one of the pioneer's in Contender (and Encore) cartridge developement does instill kind of a special pride of ownership in owning one of his custom rigs (along with the scrimping and saving to buy one). This is not to say that pride of ownership isn't also there with factory barrels or their rechambers, but its just not the same for me (yet another IMO). To each his own as they say. Regards -

I ordered a 24" Contender rifle barrel in 375 JDJ from Fox Ridge the other day. I think there has been a business relationship between T/C and SSK for some time. In addition to offering the 300 Whisper chambering, Fox Ridge offers the original SSK T'SOB mount for Contender and Encore barrels. Also, in previous T/C catalogs, they have shown what appear to be 375 JDJ barrels in hunting pictures (2000 catalog?) - the caption read something like "...Cape Buffalo taken with a 375 cal. Contender..."

I have been very pleased with the T/C custom shop and SSK, but I've bought 2 SSK barrels this year so now it's T/C's turn.
