Savage Model 10 Range Time

Had the Model 10 out for some range time this weekend. My plan this year is to move down in bullet weight. Last year I was shooting cast 330 grain .458 bullets with MMP sabots and 5744 powder, reasonable accuracy results. Some of the reading about the loads for the Model 10 suggest XTP 250 grain in 45 caliber. Off to the range I go with these loads and for back up loads I bring some .429 round nose cast bullets from my Lee mold and TC Sabots to go with them. I forgot the 45 caliber sabots and ended up firing the .429 bullets and sabots instead, with 5744 powder. I was very surprised to see a 3 inch group @ 100 yards since i considered the load second rate with junk bullets. The cast bullets were 75% WW and 25% pure.  FYI

I'm glad to see your getting good results with the cast bullets. Some people say the lead bullet will obturate and not be very accurate.
I like shooting a 435 gr FN soft cast with great accuracy, last year i was using a 520 gr RN., and a 300gr  I got OK accuracy but the 435 seems better.  good luck and keep shooting. dan

Maybe a 250 grain pure lead bullet with a maximum charge could have accuracy issues. I will try that some day.

A pure lead slug with a big powder charge, such as 45 grains of VV N110, will not work well. It will obdurate.
To wring out the power available with the Savage you need a jacketed slug, or else a pure copper slug.

A harder cast bullet seems to work well with max loads.

Yeah I have read of a guy shooting a 335 grain hardened lead slug from Cast Performance and getting good results at high speed with the Savage.

Another problem the guys have encountered with soft lead slugs and the Savage is failure to fire.
The guys will be at the range with, say, a 350 gr. soft lead slug, and 43 grains of N110, and all will be working fine.
At the end of the day, they leave a charge in the rifle.
Next day, they go deer hunting, and get a misfire!

The best guess is, that the soft lead accomadates to the rifling, and "relaxes" a little bit. This reduces the pressure. Smokeless needs high pressure in order to ignite.

If you want to mess with soft all lead slugs stick to a lower performance powder that has good ignition characteristics, such as 5744.

5744 is all I use, for its ignition qualities.

Here is what I like about my Savage.

No corrosive clean up.

Shoots almost every thing I feed it with amazing accuracy. cheap stuff and expensive.

Very, very reliable ignition.

Tang safety.

Nice trigger.

Thats about it.

I love the Savage.
Accurate, hard hitting.
I shot a big 8 pointer November 2007, still haven't cleaned the rifle.

I loaded my Savage ML in November 2008, using AA5744 and a Hornady 250gr XTP, .452". On 11/10/09 I shot the rifle at a deer 165 yards away, the deer jumped out of sight and was recovered 10 yards from the shot. I think a Savage ML is all you need or want, mine is a keeper. Accuracy is excellent and being able to leave the rifle loaded ready for use is fantastic. I did of course remove the primer before storage.
