Heavy bullets in .357 Blackhawk?
« on: June 04, 2009, 09:01:09 AM »
Just got a .357 Blackhawk and like it pretty good.  I haven't loaded any heavy bullets for it, which is what I prefer in my .45 and .44.
Will the Ruger stabilize 180's and 200's enough to be accurate?  I'd like to get a LBT mold in a LFN if it will work.
Seems like most of the listings for heavy bullets refer to the .357 max.
thanks in advance.

Almost all the bullets I shoot out of my rugers are in the 180 to 200 gr size, I prefer them and all of my .357s shoot them well.
My favorite being a 180gr LBT style LRFNGC works well for me. 8)

I've shot both the Hornady 180 XTP's, and the Remington 180 HP's out of my Blackhawks, and Security Six's (same barrel twist, etc.) with good luck. I don't have a 180 Gr. bullet mold yet.

I shoot 200 gr. from a Saeco mould in a pr. of Ruger .357 BHK in long range competition.
Both are very accurate.

Mine shot fine with 180 gr. XTP's over a compressed charge of H-110. In the Speer manual, you'll find then under .357 Magnum (Silhouette loads). I went to their max cgarge, no problem. The fun one so far was the 125 gr./Compressed H-110 load. About 2,000 fps at the muzzle! Can't wait to whop some 'yotes with it!

bagdadjoe, Go ahead and start shooting those LBT's. I shoot the 180gr FN gc from my LBT mold, in both my Blackhawk and my Marlin 1894C. Cast from wheel weights (aircooled) they are accurate, stable and most of all hit with authority. You should have no problem. www.gmdr.com has loading data for 180gr cast bullets in the 357 mag that should get you started. CRASH87

I have been shooting BTB 185's and Saeco 180's with no issues and just started load development for a RD 190gr tumble lube and so far it looks like I may be retiring the saeco mold.

crash, thanks for the link!
Yes, I know it's cocked, It's got bullets too.

My 6 1/2 inch Blackhawk loves the 170 grain Keith style SWC's and the 187 grain Cast Performance FN GC's.

My Bisley 357 just loves those 180 grain bullets.  You should not have any problem at all. 8)
