Cannonmn,

Did you get any photo's of the bronze guns by the museum? I believe there are some french & Spanish guns there,

I saw them passing through, but did not have time to stop. the last time I was there was 2001 or 2002
Mr president I do not cling to either my gun or my Bible.... my gun is holstered on my side so I may carry my Bible and quote from it!

If you don't mind my posting them for now as links, so I can do it quick in the time I have, I'll make them available.  I posted four sets of links on the CMH board.

Here are links to photo groups I-4 respectively, probably about 100 photos total.  If anyone wants to put the links inside the [IMG] stuff so the photos will show up here automatically, be my guest, I just lack the time at the moment.

Cannonmn,

I found the article about the French guns coming from Richmond interesting, it seems that there is a 1860's news paper piece somewhere on

the web that mentions the French cannon that were given as gifts to the city by the french,  and their possible use in the war. So these may have been

gifts from France and not left by the French at Yorktown.........

Thanks for posting the links there are far more cannon there than I thought, and some fairly early cannon too, at least on from the Sun King.

From one of my postings on the CMH board:

They have a fascinating history which is almost too extensively described in some 100 pages of "100 Years of VMI" vol. 3. Briefly, they were purchased from France ca. 1778, and delivered to the US. This group of them, plus a few more melted down during the Civil War, were sunk underwater to hide them from the British, and were not recovered until the early 19th C. Extended litigation eventually awarded them to the State of Virginia.

Makes one wonder if they recovered them all or if there are still French cannon sitting in a river somewhere.
