Happy Birthday and Thank You Marines!!!

From the halls of Montezuma
To the shores of Tripoli,
We fight our country's battles
In the air, on land, and sea.
First to fight for right and freedom,
And to keep our honor clean,
We are proud to claim the title
Of United States Marines.

Our flag's unfurl'd to every breeze
From the dawn to setting sun;
We have fought in every clime and place
Where we could take a gun.
In the snow of far-off northern lands
And in sunny tropic scenes,
You will find us always on the job
The United States Marines.

Here's health to you and to our Corps
Which we are proud to serve;
In many a strife we've fought for life
And have never lost our nerve.
If the Army and the Navy
Ever look on Heaven's scenes,
They will find the streets are guarded
By United States Marines.

100? That's for recruits. How about I do 200 of them for you guys. Hell, lets make it 300. Then, once the ambulance gets me to the hospital and I'm all tuck into my hospital bed and hooked up to oxygen, we can talk about doing some chin-ups or maybe some running with full packs. ;D ;D

Semper Fi and Hooorah to my friend Bill Yost.
Bill was a Marine aviator (gunner) at the beginning of WWII. After 50 missions he was told he qualified not to fly anymore. he was told to pick up a BAR until they could find a transport going East.
After The Canal, Iwo, Buckner Bay and Siapan they found a transport-- going to China---just about the time he found a transport to America THEY found him another one going too Korea---15 years later they laid him off as he was getting orders for in country. That is 20+ years, a Siver Star and two hearts later.
Semper Fi Gunney Yost--you damned ol Jarhead--I love ya.
He may not see another year--He is 88 and doing poorly.
Blessings

Just let it go.

Bravo 51,

I have nothing to let go. I was just trying to have some good spirited fun with you Marines. Somehow you misunderstood the intent of my post. Bravado? If I could really do 300 dying cockroaches, I wouldn't be sitting here behind this computer. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Carry on Marine.

Well guys you might like hearing this.  Yesterday Sky (my son) called his Mom and I and wanted us to meet him a Denny's for lunch.  He told his Mom he wanted to discuss something important.

When we got to Denny's Sky was there waiting for us.  He dropped a bomb shell on his Mom, I sort of knew what he was thinking.

"Mom, I am going to Anchorage over the Christmas break, to talk to the Marine Adjacent".  "I am going to sign up for the Officer Program they have".  My wife was in shock, she just sat there staring at him.  When she got her voice back she started asking "What's wrong with the Air Force, or the Navy"?  Michelle and I are both retired Air Force, but she had been addimately opposed to him going into the military.    Sky informed her he wanted to fly the Osprey, and the Marines were the only ones that flew it.  Sky has had some flight training.  He loves to fly his Uncles planes (Cessnas and Pipers) and he has flown the Black Hawk simulator many times.

Sky wants to enroll in the flight training program at UAF.  Then he will go to some type of training program with the Marines during the summer when school is out.  Then back to finish school.  He has one more year to finish college.  Then straight into the Marines.

OK, I'm not happy, but it is his life and what he wants is what I will back.  When I asked him Why do you want to go into the Marines, he said "Why not, and why not me".  He feels since the country (VA) is paying for his schooling he owes it to the country to go in and serve.  Many of his buddies (all with VA benefits for college) have dropped out of college and went into the Army.  They have all told him to wait till he has his degree before going in.  So that is his plan.

Looks like we will be flying to Anchorage the last week of December.

His big brother is really Pi$$ed, he is a Navy Recruiter.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Sourdough-I lived for 20 years (school years) between two Air Force bases, had a cousin who was a Brigadier General in the same service, and 4 Uncles all WWII vets in the Army. I joined the Marine Corps my first year in college. It wasn't in "spite" of my "kin", but because of what I thought (in my youth) each service offered. My Dad did not approve and my Mother was "mortified" at the time, but never discouraged me. My Mother became my biggest supporter and wrote me often, never condeming my choice. My Dad accepted my choice and my vocation.
I went through a very similar program your son may go through and after initial training with the "Corps", on to Naval Flight School. (Sky's brother's service gets to train him, and they'll do a great job!). He'll get a dose of what "duty, honor, country" means and that taking an oath to protect this country against all enemies foreign or "domestic" is "serious stuff", which will have a profound effect on his relationship with you. No, he won't be taught that any of the "sister services", no matter how "junior" (had to throw that in ;D, please no "hate" mail from my esteemed "brother-in-arms") are any less essential, but will believe he belongs to the "best" (which we all should!).
You have much to be proud for a son who takes his citizenship responsibilities seriously and is not just giving "patriotism" quasi "lip service". Whether myself, or anyone else that knows him personally, disagrees because of our knowledge and experience is a "moot point"; he will never be satisfied with anyone else's decision but his own.
I'm sorry for being so long on a subject so personal, but hopefully you'll understand my position as a retired Marine" who has "been there, done that" and had parents just as concerned during the Vietnam era. Like Oldshooter, I'm not particulary happy with this country's "leadership", but while in the service I've been in that situation before. This country needs dedicated armed forces members who have a "conection" with its people more than ever!
Thank you and your wife's service to this country! And, the very best to your son in his endeavors!  Jager

jager: I think a lot of Sky's attitude came from his being awed by the awards and decorations his Mom and I had on the walls of our offices.  He came to our offices from the time he could first walk to today.  His Mother has one whole wall of her office covered with her military career honors.  I worked Presidential Support during the Nixon Whitehouse, and I have a lot of awards and letters from that.

Sky also has been going through his Grandfathers war record.  My father-In-Law flew B-17s during WWII, and was shot down three times, and survived, once behind enemy lines.  So he may also feel he has a big family tradition to follow.

I asked him why the Marines?  His reply, "I want to be the best, and they are the best of the best".

SD: the Osprey is gonna be the future of combat at least for the next 20 years or so. With all the MRAPs, Strykers and MTVRs getting bogged down in the holes we're fighting in, air power is the future. Park an Amphib off shore with a couple of those on deck and appropriate gunships, and your talking serious forward projection. The new Amphib carriers don't even have a well deck, which is sad from a traditional view, but awesome if you've ever sat in the dark with a bunch of your closest friends, smelling like puke, diesel and balls ... sweet Jesus when will this thing ever hit the beach, make it stop, make it stop ... praying you don't start to sink because despite what they say, its uncertain if you'll fit through the little round hole in the roof assuming you can get the 100# of gear off. That's the glamour gents! Gimme a CH-53E leaking hydraulic fluid any day of the week.  ;D
