Group seeks deer heartsby JSOnline
Posted: Nov. 14, 2009Attention deer hunters: The Raptor Education Group of Antigo is asking for your help.
The organization wants you to save the heart from deer you harvest and donate the organ(s) to help feed its birds.
The group cares for and rehabilitates hundreds of injured birds of prey each year; it had 65 birds, including 15 bald eagles, at its facility in early November.
An eagle can devour 3 pounds of beef heart in one day, said Marge Gibson, REG executive director.
If hunters donate deer hearts, it will save the non-profit, donor-funded organization thousands of dollars off its monthly food bill, said Gibson.
High in protein and low in fat, deer hearts make a healthy meal for eagles, hawks, falcons and owls.
REG will accept deer hearts throughout the gun deer season.
Hunters may drop them off at Zillman's Meat Market in Wausau; Country Fresh Meats in Weston; Ken's in Antigo; and People's Meat Market in Stevens Point.
