IMR 4895 question
« on: November 11, 2009, 07:48:03 AM »
i have some imr4895 i want to use in my 30-06 and have seen the load data for that powder and a 150 gr bullet at the hodgdon site....they list a start load and a max load and the start load is about 10% below the max and normally i would start with the starting load and increase 1/2 gr at a time  and work up...but i want to go the other way, starting with the start load and then work down 1/2 gr at a time just a little bit....something around 2600 fps. Do any of you guys have experience with imr4895 doing this or is this just another crazy idea of mine that needs to go to the round file :D

Start low and work up. Opposite way is not very smart, IMO.

You can do it with *H-4895, since Hodgdon now makes the IMR as well you might just check with them on this.

*Multiply the max powder charge by .6( 6/10th) that is the lowest reduced charge recommended for
 H-4895.

i called hodgdon and they told me they had no info on the imr4895 because they have done no testing of imr4895 at less than the starting load....they have done significant testing on the h4895

There is NO IMR anymore. Hodgdon bought them and thus IMR does not exist any longer.

And not only that, but General Dynamics owns the manufacturing plant in Canada, so Hodgdon only owns the name and buys the powder.  Sometimes they even put the IMR name on Aussie-sourced (ADI) powder that is normally called Hodgdon powder.

Get some IMR 4759.  It is made for reduced loads.  I have used it in the 223 and 30-06 with good results.

IMR 4895 is an excellent powder for the 30-06 with the 150 grain bullet. Heavier bullets will perform somewhat better with slower powders. Back in the 60's I shot lots of 4895 and 150's in the 30-06. It was well known as a versatile and accurate powder.

I looked at my older load data and 51.0 grains of IMR 4895 was my standard load with the 150 bullet. I have loaded and successfully fired 4895 with cast gas check bullets with as little as 30.0 grains in the 30-06.

Load sensibly and it should perform well for you. IMR 4895 and IMR 4350 are two powders to keep in stock. You can load nearly any rifle cartridge with one or the other.

Is IMR4895 not the same powder as H4895   ???

I would think if they bought out IMR, and are using the same numbers to identify their powder it would be the same.

Even when the company's were seperate, the loads were'nt that much different. Now that their combined, probably like 296/H110. I wouldn't bet against it! I'll do just like I've done for 35 years. Start at the bottom of the load, and work my way up. And that even means just using the same powder, just changing lot numbers. Back when I was shooting silhouette quite heavy, A different lot of IMR 4895 gave me the same results in my 7br with a grain less powder. (kinda nice, as that gave a bunch more loads out of an 8#keg) gypsyman
We keep trying peace, it usually doesn't work!!Remember(12/7/41)(9/11/01) gypsyman

They are close but not the same.  It's my understanding that the IMR brand will dissappear when the stock runs out.

Double check on this folks, but -----------

I contacted Hodgdon quite awhile back and as I recall - PLEASE CHECK FOR YOURSELF - they said you could reduce an H4895 load by 40%.

For example it your manual said a max load of 100grains, a 40% reduction would be a load of 60grains.

H4895 is known for having a wide range of usability.

However, as I have already said, check out the above info for yourself!

Keep em coming!
