P-14 Enfiend 45-70

Anyone else have a P-14 Enfield in 45-70?  I got one at a gun show a few months back.  Looks like it was built a long time ago.  Put a scope on it and reamed the throat so I can seat bullets out to increase the usefull case capacity.  Recoil is a little stout.  Had a Siamese Mauser I built into 45-70 some years ago but it was stolen along with a lot of other guns.

I have not seen a P-14 done into a 45-70.  Should be a neat gun.
I have seen the standard British enfiled either the No 1 of WWI fame or the No 4 of WWII fame made into 45-70 and offered by a rifle company that was also offering copies of the No 5. jungle carbine.
The company that was making the 45-70 out of the british enfields (I say brit as opposed to the Remington P-14 / P-17)
could handle the standard american load and NEVER EVER should have the hot loads put through it.
the P-14 is a different critter and can hndle the hot 45-70 rounds so you have a rimmed 458 if you want to go that hot.
Again make sure you have a P-14/ P-17.  The 14 was 303 brit the P17 was 30-06 and was said to be what Sgt York used.  but not sure if he had one or a springfield.

It is a P-14 for sure.  They (?) milled the rear sight ears off so it looks like a Model 30 Remington.  Also welded on a straight bold handle.  Only hold 3 rounds in the magazine as its depth was reduced.  I think it was built in the 1950s as it has that style.

You have a brush gun for deer, moose, and black bear with the standard loads.  300 JHP @ 1800 FPs or the 405 SP/Lead @1300 FPS
or a Camp cannon for Brown bear when elk hunting with the Hot bottom of the 458 Win Mag loads.
Built something similar with a siamese action.

I have the same rifle.  Don't know who built it.  I have a soft spot for 45-70' and walked into my dealers a number of months ago and he had this Thing sitting on the counter he had just taken in with a group of rifles.  Family was getting rid of them when Grandpa died since nobody had any interest in them.

Anyhow the recoil pad had not been fitted and hung out all around the stock, it was missing the sling swivels and it had a cheap peep on the back with the barrel band (like express) front site.  I think it has a 20" barrel.

I bought it on the spot.  It doesn't like "multi-feeding" anything but the big 550gr round nose case bullets but will singe feed everything else.  I have found this common in other 45-70 conversions including the siamese and the lee enfields of which I have had both and wish I had not let them go.

Anyway I pulled off the front express site and added a scope (it was drilled and tapped for one), it didn't look right with the front site and scope.  My eyes just will not do a rifle justice without glass on it.   That rifle will hold 2" with cast bullets all day long, better some days.  Someone spent a lot of time and $$ on this one as the stock is very nicely done, it is bedded, the barrel it floated adn the site ears were milled off before the entire gun was refinished.

I too, added a scope.   The rifle came with old Lyman receiver sights and a barrel band front sight.  Custom wood.  The magazine box was shortened.  It holds three rounds.  I bought a bore throater because it would not chamber anything but factory length load.  Due to the primer shortage I have not done much reloading but I have loaded some old Hornady 300 gr. HP pretty hot using RL-7 and some Barnes original 400 gr. sptizers warm.  Kick hard off a bench.  Not bad offhand.

With the P14 action you might be able to rechamber the rifle to 45-90 for a bit more punch.  Or the same punch with less pressure. 

I had a Siamese but would love to find one of the P14s.

I saw this post as I just put 30rds through a very nice p14 shooting 45/70 really it's a 45 something as my friends gun is built on the 2.8'' case. A 500gr Hornady at 2150fps Recoil is not all that bad the gun is 10.5 lbs. He got the stock from Richards gun stocks in California it's a lam stock the drop mag is still on the gun so it will hold 4 of the big rounds. Has a 23 '' barrel. I need to get a digital camera as I am still stuck in the 35mm world. I would say it's between the 458 Win and the big Lott in performance. Closer to the Lott as it's the same length case He will be going to Africa this year for buff I will be going about one Month after him to get a lion I will be using my .375 or maybe my .404.
 My only problem and it is not a real problem is the cock on closing,Yes it can be coverted I know, but it takes a bit to get used to, luckely I am used to it having shot thousands of rds out of a .303 so it did not through me off.
