357 Slick Barrel to iron sight?
« on: October 01, 2009, 03:27:15 AM »
What is the best way to put iron sights on a slick barrel 357?  I was thinking WGRS peep mounted for the rear, but didn't know about the front.

I think the gun would be more fun without a scope.

Thanks,
-Kyle

I'm no expert, but I had a gunsmith put a front sight on my 45/410 Survivor and installed an XS Back-up Ghost ring sight on the scope rail.

Kyle, I just don't know right off, I'll have to take a look when I get home after work.  I don't want to mis-lead you by saying what I think instead of what I know.  ???

the factory front sight installs with a screw.....so you'd need to drill and tap to go that way

For the life of me, I don't know why they don't offer both clean barrels or iron sighted ones.  They could add the greater cost to the one and still offer both.  Doesn't seem like rocket science to me.  A lot of folks like myself need a scope at any distance.  Others want open sights for close in work with rifles like the .357, .44 and .45.  Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the help.  It helped me decide to pick up the 357 slick barrel that's been taunting me in the local Gander Mountain!  I gave a little too much for it ($270 out the door), but I can't find another 357 anywhere.

I put Williams WGRS rear sights on, and plan to order a factory NEF front sight blade.  Any idea which one I need?  I plan on letting Gander Mountain drill and tap it for me.  I figure if anything goes wrong, they're most likely to make it right.  Might even end up putting the BC stock set on.

I haven't decided if I'm going Max or not.  I don't want my 38/357 accuracy affected, since I plan to let my wife and kids shoot this one.  How do I know if it will shoot 360DW safely?  I think the extra would be good for whitetail.

Well, with such a long post, I owe everyone a picture.  (The front sight is just setting on the barrel...it's off of my 22 Versa).

Can someone recomend an H&R factory front ramp sight blade to use with the Williams rear peep sight on this 357?

Thanks!

As I noted in another post, the 0.634" (RO3872) was not available from H&R.  I ordered the next tallest one they had, which was 0.578" (listed on the invoice as FR03873).

I also ordered the screws from Brownells (H01728), since not only did H&R not send one with the sight, when I called back they said they don't have any.

I then brought the gun to Gander Mountain (where I purchased it) and the gunsmith installed the front sight for 30 bucks.

Here's what I got at 50 yards.

I'm pretty happy with it.  The Williams sight is adjusted slightly to the left, and the front adjustment is about 80% as high as it will go.

Thanks for all the help!

i ordered the .634 front sight from H+R(after calling them to assure it was available) and the dummies sent me the next shorter one.  :-\With my wgrs at the bottom mark elevation-wise my target loads print dead on and i'm assuming the full power load will print a little higher, so i'd say the .634 is the right one but the .580 will work...at least it is for me ;)

zoner,

Is that at 50 yards?  I wonder why I'm almost to the top, and you're all the way at the bottom?  (I'm shooting 158 grain).

From all accounts on this forum, going 357 Max DOES NOT effect accuracy at all for any loads - 38, 357 or 360, even though the freebore may seem especially large (38SP 1.155" COL compared to the 357 Max 1.605" COL). Also, members indicate you can shoot 360DW (1.401" COL) without going Max, as long as your action locks up. I guess it is possible due to the long throat in the standard 357 Mag chamber.

The 357 Max has to be close to the all-time versatile Handi.

Kng.....made me wonder too so i pulled that sight off and measured with a dial caliper and it measures .530, not .580.....at 50 yds my target load elevation is dead on with the peep on the bottom elevation mark. That load is 5.5 grs 231...158 gr RNL....about 1100 fps from a revolver barrel
