No stamping on 1894 44ss barrel
« on: December 26, 2009, 03:12:33 PM »
Hello. I Bought my son a new in the box 1894 44ss for Christmas. While he was admiring it, he noticed the barrel had nothing stamped on it at all saying Marlin, 44mag, where it was made or anything. I have a blued version that has all that info stamped on the left side of the barrel, and a warning about improper use can cause injury or death on the right side. The only thing that is stamped on his is a small "jm" on the left side of the barrel just above the receiver. The receiver does have the SN stamped on it. Shouldn't the stainless model have have all other info stamped on it as well? If this is a factory oversight, does this add or take away any value to the gun? Thanks for any information on this. Cretch.

If the caliber is not stamped on the barrel, I would think that it is a factory oversight...I'm not sure it ads to the value, but a serious Marlin collector might be interested in it as a "curio". Also, you mght check with Marlin, they would probably like to have it back to stamp caliber on it ( liability issue ). For that matter, if you haven't shot it yet, you mght want to have a gunsmith do a chamber casting, to insure it has been properly chamber, and is indeed a .44 mag.

The gun hasn't been shot yet. The only indication it is a 44 mag, is there is a stamp on the slide/ejector that says "44 sst". My son said he might contact marlin to see what they say about it.
