max nose to crimp groove length
« on: November 19, 2009, 11:21:09 AM »
I could swear I saw this in a recent thread, but I'm now unable to find it.

For the 475L in the FA, what is the maximum nose to crimp groove length that can be used and still fit w/in the cylinder?

If my numbers are correct:
the max OAL of the m83 is 1.8"
max length of a 475L case is 1.4"

Soooooo........   .4" would be the max nose to crimp groove length.  Sound right?  So we could say .38" to allow some wiggle room?

one more question...........are there any difficulties with the driving bands on wadcutters/semi-wadcutters fitting in the FA cylinders or do LBT style bullets work better?

Thank you,
C.R.

****Edit.........found the thread.

.375 is the # i'm looking for

What's a "max nose to crimp groove length"!? This is why I don't reload  :o

it is the distance between the crimp groove and the tip of the bullet.

Basically it is the part of the bullet that is exposed on a loaded cartridge.

by "max", it is the longest this exposed part of the bullet can be without the bullet sticking out the end of the cylinder.

the difference betwee cylinder and case lengths (and a little wiggle room) will define the maxium nose to crimp groove length.

Thank you for the answer. I know there is a "learning curve" with everything. Still I feel dumb sometimes. Thanks again for your time.
