It is my understanding that it is a BAD THING to shoot mil-spec 5.56 NATO rounds in a Contender.  Pressures are higher than in 223 Rem ammo and can stretch the frame.

Before I knew that though, I did fire some 5.56 through my Contender.  Not a lot, certainly less than 100 rounds, and it's still ok.  I don't do it anymore.
