The 45/70 like 39.5 grains...but

After hunting was called for rain, I went to the range and shot up all the loads I had with me. The 45/70 barrel likes the 39.5 grains of 4198 and a 405 grain cast bullet, but the gun needs work.

When my groups were good, they were very, very good, but a change of hold and especially pressure on the forend, would open them up...sometime a lot.

I had on unbelievable 1 hole, 3 shot group at 50 yards but most looked like this 100 yarder.

For a 100 yard group with a 45/70 I'd say that looks darn good. Should be as good as you'll ever need.

That group is fine Don. It's about what I get from my Guide Gun. My concern is the blown groups. I'm certain it is forend related and the Faq's are full of fixes. Tomorrow, I'll try the O ring and free float everything forward of the stud...Then back to the range.

Instead of using the O ring, try getting a couple of #12 split lock washers and spreading them out with a couple of pliers until they will fit over your forearm screw.  They will fit into the stud hole of the forearm without any modification and offer a consistant seat when the forearm is attached.  I used stainless washers, and they worked fine.
