Switching the safety on a 7400
« on: January 11, 2010, 09:36:54 AM »
I have a 7400 in .270 that I got a good deal on.  I got it because I shoot lefty and it works great (no jam-o-matic here).  My only problem is with the safety.  Because I am a lefty I have to reach under and around to switch the safety off before I fire.  I read that you can switch these around on some models (I know you can with a Browning for example) but I have not heard if you can to it with a Remington.  Has anyone ever come across this before?  Also, if it can be done, how much will it cost?

Thanks for your assistance.

I switched the safety on my son's 7600, which I assume is the same setup as a 7400.  We had to buy a left handed safety (he's left handed) and the replacement was fairly cheap.  A gunsmith installed it when it was in the shop for a recoil pad, but I figure it isn't too tough of a job to do yourself.

Gunrookie, Numrich gun parts had the safety last I checked. You can google left hand 1100, 870, etc Remington safety to find it. The switch out is not complicated. I've done dozens. You do need instructions though. Post up again if you get that far, I'll try to walk you through it.

Really easy anyone can do it.
On one 1100 I had, I had
to stone the back of the trigger
because it dragged, but replacing
the safety is a snap, getting the damn
action back in sometimes drives me nuts

The only caveat here is that if you do switch the safety and then loan, trade, or sell the rifle, make sure the new user knows the safety has been switched.  Otherwise they'll be thinking it's "on" when it's really "off".

If all your life you have reached around a trigger guard, you will have to retrain yourself for the moment when you shoot without thinking about the safety.  Had a friend who jumped a monster deer and he pulled the trigger until the deer ran out of range, then remembered he had reversed the safety.
